Famous or Notable Convicts The First Fleet arrived in Port Jackson in 1788 it comprised eleven ships bearing around 1400 people, half of whom were convicts between 1788 and 1868,large numbers of convicts were transported to the various Australian penal colonies by the British government one of the primary reasons for the British settlement of Australia was the establishment of a penal colony to alleviate pressure on their overburdened correctional facilities when the last convict ship docked in Fremantle many of those transported were not criminals in the true sense, but found themselves crossing the oceans as a result of some youthful, impetuous statement or action.
