Writing Great LinkedIn Invitations | Investing, Raising Capital, Great LinkedIn invitations? Are they really that big a deal? Sure, canned messages are lame, but inviting someone to connect via LinkedIn (or any other social networking site) is just a simple matter of record-keeping. What’s wrong with just, “Hey, let’s connect?” That’s one way to look at it. But consider this: every communication you have with someone in your network is an opportunity to move that relationship forward, to make it stronger. It’s not that there’s anything “wrong” with treating a LinkedIn invitation as a simple mechanical action, but it’s a missed opportunity.

A few extra seconds can transform it into a relationship-building activity. One way to ensure having your LinkedIn invitations accepted is to email the person before sending them a LinkedIn invitation and ask them if they’d like to connect on LinkedIn. The basic format is the same in all cases: Establish context.

Diary of a Social Venture Start-up: The Start-up Survival Kit - eLearning Technology. I had a great conversation last week that sparked an early stage idea for what I think would be a wonderful way for learning and development organizations to leverage SharePoint better. HP Web 2.0 for Marketing – Social Learning Experience The concept is probably easiest to understand by considering what HP did around their course on Web 2.0 for Marketing. You can find more on this by going to the LearnTrends – SharePoint in Corporate Learning Recordings. The basic concept was that HP’s learning organization wanted to help their marketing professionals get up to speed on the implications of Web 2.0 for HP’s marketing efforts. Of course, that’s an interesting learning problem in that the answer around “implications” is not defined. The L&D organization created a social learning experience that brought together 60 marketing professionals from across the organization.

In the picture below, you can see some of the mechanisms they used: The results were pretty incredible for HP. Home. HOW TO: Take Advantage of Social Media in Your E-mail Marketing. This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. You’ve most likely had an e-mail newsletter for your company for much longer than you’ve had a presence on social media sites. But now that you do both, the two can go hand-in-hand, with e-mail creating an opportunity to extend your presence on social media sites, and social media sites providing a way to get more e-mail subscribers.

At the moment though, most marketers aren’t connecting the dots. According to a recent study published by eMarketer, 48% of marketers include “forward to a friend” features in their e-mails, but only 13% include features that make it easy to share content on social networks. Here’s a look at how to close the gap, and why it’s so important that you do. Why Include Social Media in Your E-mail? How to Do It Growth Strategies Beyond that, create compelling content that people want to share.

InShare0 Switching to a new computer can be a painful experience, and my own previous experiences have been just that.

I actually know quite a lot of people who prefer to stick with their old and low-performing computers simply because it is such a cumbersome task to switch to a new one. I got my new work laptop, a Dell Latitude E4300, yesterday. For me, switching to a new (PC) computer has never been as easy and painless as this time. In total, it took me about 30 minutes to get productive on my new laptop, with all my content, applications and settings in place.

First of all, I am a frequent user of Google Docs. Nowadays I manage all my files and documents in DropBox. For my to-do-lists I use Google Tasks, so I didn’t need to care about moving those. All work emails, contacts and calendar events are stored on the Exchange server, so I didn't have to care about those things. For password management, I use the SplashID iPhone app. All in all, this took me about 5 minutes. Simple small business software, collaboration, CRM: 37signals. February 5, 2014. This year marks 37signals' 15th year in business. And today is Basecamp's 10th birthday. We have a lot to celebrate, and two exciting announcements to share. But first, let's set the scene with some history. 37signals was founded back in 1999 as a web design firm. Since then we've launched Ta-da List (2005), Writeboard (2005), Backpack (2005), Campfire (2006), The Job Board & Gig Board (2006), Highrise (2007), Sortfolio (2009), the all new Basecamp (2012), Know Your Company (2013), and We Work Remotely (2013).

We also created and open sourced Ruby on Rails (2004), wrote a few books (Defensive Design for the Web (2004), Getting Real (2006), REWORK (2010), and REMOTE (2013)), and published thousands of blog posts on Signal vs. Fifteen years into it, we're proud of the work we've done and the business we've built. However, because we've released so many products over the years, we've become a bit scattered, a bit diluted. Basecamp is our best idea and our biggest winner.

Over the past year, I’ve published 80 blog posts, and I’m pleased to say that I have readers and subscribers now, too! My goal for this blog was always for it to be a meeting place, and a conversation starter around the convergence of social media, nonprofits, and technology.
