Building 21st Century Writers. Curriculum | In Print Building 21st Century Writers By Jennifer Demski03/07/12 Students at Littleton Public Schools (CO) use basic netbooks and an array of cloud-based and open source tools to support a district-wide writing initiative.
During what might have in the distant past been called "quiet time" in Arlene Anderson's fourth-grade classroom, many of her students are glued to their netbooks. The intense, enthusiastic focus and the hushed chatter amongst the students are all about high scores and strategy. "For students, the software is an amazing self-motivator for writing, editing, and reviewing their writing," explains Anderson. The software and netbooks are part of the Saugus Union School District's (CA) Student Writing Achievement Through Technology Enhanced Collaboration (SWATTEC) initiative, one of a number of similar tech-supported initiatives that encourage writing across the curriculum. Why Writing? The district rolled out the initiative in 2008.

I have realised over the past 6 months how few schools are actually clear about what their long term vision is.
Part of the impact of this lack of vision and disciplined building of this vision is that schools can quite often be focussed on things that disperse their power and ability. They become like a thirsty person wandering in the desert – going from one mirage to the next. Teachers become inured to change and morale can suffer. Ask a Tech Teacher. Sample Technology Plan Vision Statements. Sublime Learning. Developing a School or District Technology Plan. ISSUE: To realize the benefits of technology, schools must develop a plan for integrating technology into the curriculum.
An effective technology plan is based on the shared vision of educators, parents, community members, and business leaders who have technological expertise. It ensures that technology strengthens existing curricula and supports meaningful, engaged learning for all students. It also specifies how the technology will be paid for and how its use will be supported.
OVERVIEW: Because technology continues to play an important role in modern industrial society, integrating technology into the schools will help prepare students to succeed in a rapidly changing world. "Technology is transforming society, and schools do not have a choice as to whether they will incorporate technology but rather how well they use it to enhance learning" (North Central Regional Educational Laboratory & Illinois State Board of Education, 1995). As part of our Connected Learning Community program (1:1 in grades 6-12, to begin next school year), we are currently in the process of developing a technology vision statement. At the moment, the vision statement is for our CLC, but potentially could (should?) Be a vision for technology at YIS in general. Yet another one of my favorite things about YIS is the number of people in our community willing to dedicate their time and energy to ensuring that big projects, like this one, are successful.
During our half-day of planning two weeks ago, we had 16 teachers (at least one person from every department), 2 parents, 10 students, and 3 administrators present. I am so proud of the way that we are involving all stakeholders in this process. Tech Learning TL Advisor Blog and Ed Tech Ticker Blogs from TL Blog Staff – TechLearning.com - Steve Hargadon.
