The graduate students were responsible for watering and caring for the plants in our greenhouse, and we were required to water the eucalyptus heavily; in other words, we would place a hose right into the tree’s growth container and leave it running for a half hour. I was happy to do whatever it took; the tree had lovely, fragrant pale green leaves and stood about 12 feet tall, dominating our small greenhouse.
