Eric Klinenberg: The Surprising Appeal Of Living Alone. More people live alone than at any point in human history. But why? Today, a surprisingly high number of people are choosing to go solo because it facilitates the pursuit of good things that are otherwise hard to come by: Control of one's own time and space. Freedom to do what one wants, when one wants to do it. Privacy. Anonymity. Autonomy. Living alone was once most prevalent in rural areas that attracted migrant workers. Although many people assume that living alone is an American phenomenon (well, at least I once did), by international standards the United States is a laggard.
I've been studying the rise of solo living for nearly a decade. Here are some of the ways that people I interviewed explain the benefits of living alone. Living alone is a rite of passage 1 of 9 In recent decades a growing number of twenty- and thirty-somethings have come to view living alone as a key part of the transition to adulthood.
Biases That Cripple Smart Decision-Making. A bias is any inclination toward a particular belief or perspective, often one that is ill-supported by reason or evidence. When we call another person “biased” we usually mean that they are incapable of looking objectively at the facts. They are too stuck in their own world view, with their own prejudices, and usually unwilling have an open mind about certain issues. Psychologists claim that many of our biases are evolved mental processes which at one point may have been adaptive to our environment. Because the mind is not a perfectly calculating machine, it uses many different heuristics (or “rules of thumb”) that help guide the decision-making process. Although this process isn’t perfect, it often gets the job done in terms of survival and reproduction.
Many of these biases may still be functional in today’s world, but others can greatly inhibit us from making rational and intelligent decisions. Bias Blind Spot Confirmation Bias The Framing Effect A) Save 200 people’s lives. Halo Effect. The Moral Instinct. The Benjamin Franklin Effect & You Are Not So Smart. The Misconception: You do nice things for the people you like and bad things to the people you hate. The Truth: You grow to like people for whom you do nice things and hate people you harm. Benjamin Franklin knew how to deal with haters. Born in 1706 as the eighth of 17 children to a Massachusetts soap and candlestick maker, the chances Benjamin would go on to become a gentleman, scholar, scientist, statesman, musician, author, publisher and all-around general bad-ass were astronomically low, yet he did just that and more because he was a master of the game of personal politics.
Like many people full of drive and intelligence born into a low station, Franklin developed strong people skills and social powers. All else denied, the analytical mind will pick apart behavior, and Franklin became adroit at human relations. Franklin’s prospects were dim. At 17, Franklin left Boston and started his own printing business In Philadelphia. What exactly happened here? Let’s start with your attitudes. Ted Kaczynski. Theodore John "Ted" Kaczynski (/kəˈzɪnski/ ka-ZIN-skee, or ka-CHIN-skee; Polish: Kaczyński, pronounced [kaˈt͡ʂɨȷ̃skʲi]; born May 22, 1942), also known as the "Unabomber," is an American mathematician and serial murderer.
He is known for his wide-ranging social critiques, which opposed industrialism and modern technology.[2][3] [4][5] Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski engaged in a nationwide bombing campaign against people involved with modern technology, planting or mailing numerous home-made bombs, ultimately killing a total of three people and injuring 23 others. Kaczynski was born and raised in Evergreen Park, Illinois. While growing up in Evergreen Park he was a child prodigy, excelling academically from an early age.
Kaczynski was accepted into Harvard University at the age of 16, where he earned an undergraduate degree. Early life[edit] He attended high school at Evergreen Park Community High School. He also participated in a personality assessment study conducted by Dr. 47 Mind-Blowing Psychology-Proven Facts You Should Know About Yourself.
