Riot Games' Marc Merrill on the Tencent acquisition and the future of League of Legends. Last year's "focus," if you can assign such a thing to the Game Developers' Conference, was probably Zynga and its Facebook games, but for 2011, there was one company that kept getting brought up in the hallways and various panels in San Francisco: Riot Games. Not only did the makers of free-to-play MOBALeague of Legends clean up at last year's GDC Online awards, but last week, the Riot booth was constantly surrounded with developers, all wanting to get in on one of the quickest-growing companies around. Riot President Marc Merrill kindly sat down to chat with Joystiq about the game and the company, and we talked about the recent acqusition by Chinese giant Tencent, why Riot is growing so fast, and what's next for the game affectionately dubbed LoL.
And yes, LoL players, we asked about Magma Chamber and the Mac client. Tencent has no desire to run the company, they have no desire to influence our direction at all.- Marc Merrill We have a lot of respect for Valve. Wait a minute. Business. One of the important lessons that Colonel Boyd derived from his study of military history was the importance of decentralized decision-making and field-level initiative. As the military has applied Boyd's concepts on the modern battlefield, this lesson has been further reinforced. Quoting from the Boyd Wikipedia entry: "... Mr. SR BP - Research articles - Four reasons why I think Zynga has peaked. This is a guest post by Patrick O’Luanaigh, CEO of nDreams, a leading publisher and developer for Playstation Home and other platforms. 1) Zynga have become too greedy Playing their latest release Adventure World illustrates this – after a couple of days, it rapidly became impossible to play for more than 4 minutes a day without payment, particularly if you don’t have lots of friends playing the game.
With Cityville and Farmville this wasn’t the case. Empires and Allies was worse in this respect, but still enjoyable. But with Adventure World it simply becomes frustrating to the point of giving up. Zynga’s item costs also appear to have risen hugely, and are approaching ridiculous levels.
