Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About RaceReni Eddo-Lodge In recent years, we’ve read excellent nonfiction on race in the US, courtesy of writers such as Ta-Nehisi Coates, Claudia Rankine and Jesmyn Ward. Reni Eddo-Lodge’s superbly accessible book was a great addition to the British canon. It is impressively intersectional in its approach, talking about class and gender as well as reframing the conversation to be Britain-focused. The title alone is arresting, and can sort out those who judge a book by its cover from those willing to interrogate and investigate their own privilege.
Further reading… • Between the World and MeTa-Nehisi CoatesA memoir in the form of a letter to the author’s 14-year-old son, recalling experiences from Coates’s Baltimore youth and showing how the brutalisation of black men is intricately woven into American society. • Brit(ish)Afua HirschAs a biracial child, Hirsch was often asked where she was from – the assumption being not Britain. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Dancing. Western Star Dancers. GiveIt2Me. Science says dancing with friends is good for your health. You might not think of yourself as a dancer. In fact, maybe even the idea of dancing makes your palms sweat. But growing scientific evidence suggests that getting up and grooving with others has a lot of benefits. In our recent study, we found that synchronising with others while dancing raised pain tolerance.
It also encouraged people to feel closer to others. This might have positive implications for dance movement therapies, which are already showing promising results in the treatment of dementia and Parkinson’s. So far, our testing of the “social bonding” hypothesis of dance has focused on one particular aspect: synchronisation with other people. Vice Films via Netflix What it's about: In the post-apocalyptic Iranian ghost town known only as Bad City, a nameless teenage vampire (Sheila Vand) wanders the night. Why you should see it: The film was described as an Iranian vampire Western when it was first released in 2014, making it all the more intriguing. That description may be partially false: It was shot in California, but it was directed by an Iranian-American director, and all the characters speak in Farsi. "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" is flawed but also riveting in many ways. Mainly, it doesn't look and feel like anything else out today. This is Ana Lily Amirpour's feature directorial debut. Directorial debuts don't have to be perfect, but they should at least show a lot of promise. The Dancing Grapevine » What it means to be a ‘Social Dancer’
Being a social dancer is a fantastic thing. It means that you feel, deep in your core, a desire to connect with other human beings. It means you have a desire to be empathetic, caring, and in tune with the energy around you. We desire to create, channeling our energy into a beautiful experience that is always present and never replicated in any other place. And, unlike many things, we choose to create these magical experiences with a partner. Being a social dancer means looking inward – not outward. It means feeling, and being ready to feel, all the sensations around you. Music, partners, the floor, the air: social dancing demands awareness of all. Being a social dancer means you are ready to take care of others.
It means you are aware of your own limitations and the limitations of others – without prejudice or judgement. Being a social dancer means we prize connection over aesthetics, kindness over ego, and people over movements. Star Trek Renegades. Star Trek: Of Gods and Men.
