This week we check out something a little different: The RevolveR Steampunk bass made by Kyle Miller, aka “Thin Gypsy Thief”.
Miller, who works as a visual artist, luthier and propmaker in Vancouver, was commissioned to build the fully functional instrument for rapper T-Pain. “The bass was built for Grammy winning recording artist T-Pain as a co-branded piece to match the release of his last album, RevolveR,” Miller explains. “If you look at the detail in the inset gauges, they each say ‘T-Pain, Low Phase Revolver Phase 1 (and 2), Tallahassee FL 1898,’ in addition to a RevolveR etched brass nameplate between the two pickups.” The imaginative bass is built from an ash body with a maple top and maple neck. All the hardware is chrome, while vintage tuning machines were used to “fit the aged look of the project.” “Lots of ‘found’ bits were included in the construction, including the plunger top of an antique brass spray bottle,” Miller notes. We're torn between the thought that bands are jumping aboard the Steampunk genre to find fan-base where they otherwise wouldn't, while our other train of thought is that perhaps these bands don't fit anywhere else because they in fact are Steampunk in form and feel.
