The Fractal Lab - Cancerous cervical cells demonstrate different fractal behavior of surface adhesion maps at the nanoscale by Roland Sedivy, MD, phD, MLS, Austria - Aurora. Most recently the group of Sokolov published in Phys Rev Lett that epithelial cells of the cervix uteri demonstrates substantially different fractal behaviour at the nanoscale when the cell becomes cancerous (1).

They reported that physical irregularity of the cell membrane at nanometer level is coming from the intrinsic membrane roughness (cortical layer of cytoskeleton), small microvilli, and/or glycocalyx on the cell surface ("surface brush",hereafter). Dokukin et al. tried to mimic prescreening medical tests for cervical cancer by the way that cells were fixed, and then freeze-dried before imaging.

Estimating the Skin Cancer Using Fractals - Aurora. Fractals and Cancer - Aurora. + Author Affiliations Abstract Recent studies have shown that fractal geometry, a vocabulary of irregular shapes, can be useful for describing the pathological architecture of tumors and, perhaps more surprisingly, for yielding insights into the mechanisms of tumor growth and angiogenesis that complement those obtained by modern molecular methods.
