I’m a programmer, a developer, a hacker. I’m mostly involved with the Open Source community and I try to promote open source development as much as I can. Unfortunately, most of the time when I tell someone that I’m a “developer”, they don’t understand the concept, and when I start talking about open source, they understand me even less. The world is full of people with different background, with deferent references and we don’t always understand each other. As most of you who read my blog would probably know, I’m involved in the PS3 hacking scene, and I see a lot of misinformed people, and I read a lot of things that don’t make any sense to me.
Experts say that interest in IT project management has grown substantially in recent years. A December 2010 report from Dice.com put project managers fourth on its list of the most in-demand IT jobs for 2011. And a Forrester report found that for 2011, CIO priorities are shifting from cost reduction to improving execution. As a result, they're looking to the disciplines of project management and project portfolio management to help them "allocate resources effectively while killing off bad ideas quickly." Project managers have a huge list of software tools that can help them do their jobs, ranging from simple spreadsheets to groupware with collaboration features to full project management solutions. These tools can be very expensive, but a growing number of open source projects offer similar functionality without the high price tag.
16- Ekiga: Skype is a must have for many people out there looking to video chat with their contacts. And why not? – there is a working Skype client for all three major platforms, including Linux. But with Skype now owned by Microsoft, it might be time to begin looking more closely at Ekiga as a viable alternative. The single biggest buzz-kill I know of with Ekiga is the lack of real client support for OS X. Software listed as compliant with Ekiga is either dead in development or simply doesn't work all the way.
Whether you're looking for financial software to manage your personal finances, your small business or for a large enterprise, the open source community offers a lot of options. The business-focused products are particularly robust, with a huge list of solutions, many of which offer commercial support and/or hosting. We last updated our list of open source replacements for popular financial software about a year ago. This year, we've revisited the list, updating links and details and adding quite a few projects that we haven't featured before. Please note that the applications are not listed in order of their quality or usefulness. Instead, they're organized by category and listed alphabetically within those categories
As smartphones and tablets become increasingly popular with consumers, they're also becoming a common work tool for employees. A recent study by Dimensional Research found that 87 percent of enterprises allow employees to use personal devices for work . In addition, 80 percent of those companies allow employees to use personal smartphones for work. In response to this growing "consumerization of IT" trend, the open source community is beginning to develop apps aimed at the mobile market.

This time, we're doing something a little different: we’re highlighting outstanding commercial open source software. Before we go any farther, we should define what we mean by "commercial open source software."
Benefits of open source desktop search engines There was a time when finding the right content was simply a matter of retrieving the right floppy disk from the shoebox. Those days are long gone. Now the average desktop computer contains hundreds of gigs, and in some cases terabytes, of data! So much information is interrelated that a simple hierarchical arrangement of folders and files may no longer be sufficient to find what you need.
