Programming, Open Source, Hacking and Greedy Corporations. I’m a programmer, a developer, a hacker. I’m mostly involved with the Open Source community and I try to promote open source development as much as I can. Unfortunately, most of the time when I tell someone that I’m a “developer”, they don’t understand the concept, and when I start talking about open source, they understand me even less. The world is full of people with different background, with deferent references and we don’t always understand each other. As most of you who read my blog would probably know, I’m involved in the PS3 hacking scene, and I see a lot of misinformed people, and I read a lot of things that don’t make any sense to me. This is because most people don’t understand the world that we (developers/hackers) come from and things tend to be misinterpreted.

This message is for everybody, it’s intent is to open a window into our world so people can understand us better. What is a “program”? Now what is a “source code”? What is a “programming language”? Yes, I’m angry!

55 Open Source Replacements for Information/Project Management Tools. Experts say that interest in IT project management has grown substantially in recent years. A December 2010 report from Dice.com put project managers fourth on its list of the most in-demand IT jobs for 2011. And a Forrester report found that for 2011, CIO priorities are shifting from cost reduction to improving execution. As a result, they're looking to the disciplines of project management and project portfolio management to help them "allocate resources effectively while killing off bad ideas quickly. " Project managers have a huge list of software tools that can help them do their jobs, ranging from simple spreadsheets to groupware with collaboration features to full project management solutions.

These tools can be very expensive, but a growing number of open source projects offer similar functionality without the high price tag. For this list, we've assembled 55 different open source applications that can help IT teams manage their projects more effectively. Project Management. 20 Linux Alternatives for Common Windows Applications: Page 3. 16- Ekiga: Skype is a must have for many people out there looking to video chat with their contacts. And why not? – there is a working Skype client for all three major platforms, including Linux. But with Skype now owned by Microsoft, it might be time to begin looking more closely at Ekiga as a viable alternative. The single biggest buzz-kill I know of with Ekiga is the lack of real client support for OS X. Software listed as compliant with Ekiga is either dead in development or simply doesn't work all the way. 17- FreeMind: Windows users have found MindManager to be very effective in making sure that creative ideas are brought forth in a visual sort of way.

And thanks to FreeMind for Linux users, this goal can be accomplished without the extra price tag or needing to be run a non-Linux operating system. Like many advanced applications that are run on Linux these days, FreeMind is run with Java. Add to it that it looks the same on any platform, and my feelings aren't hurt at all.

Other projects offer the software for free, but require payment for support, maintenance, installation or other services. Why put together a list of commercial open source projects at all? Benefits of open source desktop search engines There was a time when finding the right content was simply a matter of retrieving the right floppy disk from the shoebox.

Those days are long gone. Now the average desktop computer contains hundreds of gigs, and in some cases terabytes, of data! So much information is interrelated that a simple hierarchical arrangement of folders and files may no longer be sufficient to find what you need. You need a tool that can intelligently index your files and help you locate them in the right context. I'll look at two open-source desktop search engines, imgSeek and Terrier, which are handy tools when I search image files and XML documents that contain text and references to images.

Terrier I use Desktop Terrier to narrow my search to documents containing one or two words, including references to images I specify in the search field. ImgSeek imgSeek's desktop version is a collection of free open source visual similarity projects. Figure 1. Figure 3. E-learning open source.
