October 18th, 2012 · 2 Comments A lot of folks have asked what tools we use for music appreciation, this week Playing By the Book had a call out for Music books and that was the prompt for me to pop all our musical resources into one post for our readers.
While our children learn how to play musical instruments as part of their schooling, there is so much more to the subject “Music” than playing an instrument. While we outsource music lessons, musical appreciation happens at home… the neighbours will vouch for that!!! This post contains a number of books we have enjoyed, but scroll down for some online fun and craftiness as well.
So here you go: Se7en + 1 Musical Resources we use in our Homeschool… Our Favourite Classical Music Book: The Story of the Orchestra is our favourite musical appreciation resource… we have read through this book together many, many times. Picture Books: Famous Children Series: Composers: Musical Instruments: Pieces: For Older Kids: Music Appreciation Online: The Gospel Project for Kids: The Gospel changes everything. School is sorted and officially underway. Ha ha. My title makes me chuckle. Is a homeschooler’s line up ever really and truly sorted? Ours never is. It’s fluid, changing, and shifting. Carla asked what our bins shown behind the kiddos were. I typically start the school year in the lovely schoolroom, then move us to the kitchen during the darkest, thickest parts of winter. After they remove the lids, they tip them on their sides and place them on the kitchen counter behind the table. I posted about sorting out school, but we’ve changed the line up a bit.
*Advanced Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind is a new book by the which I was super excited about. **I love Spelling Power, but the older boys continue to get very upset over missed words, even though they are improving every day. Each child’s bin has their own individual books and notebooks for the subjects above. They will also have learned several different styles of music, vocabulary, as well as have gained an appreciation for music in general. Sitio de la Reforma Integral de la Educación Básica. Curriculum. As I look toward the coming year, I think of the challenge that balancing our children’s schoolwork and all their other needs can be. Last year I had a rude awakening. I remember thinking, “The homeschool honeymoon is over!” I was so overwhelmed with 2 in school, one who thought he should be in school as well, and one who didn’t care one iota about school and just wanted my attention all the time.
It was a frustrating, hard first couple of months. However, we pushed on and tried new things (i.e. waited until toddler Tommy went to sleep to do some schooling and let Emilia take over Matthew’s education ). Now that summer is half over, we’re looking toward school again and praying for the Lord to bless this coming year (and give us patience and wisdom and loving kindness and so many other things!).
