By Kate Greene Digg , the popular aggregation website, is redefining the way that many people find news. Some 850,000 registered users effectively act as an editorial staff, recommending--or "digging"--stories that they deem interesting enough for the site's home page. Wednesday, January 24, 2007 The challenges are keeping undesirable content out and making sure that stories are promoted legitimately. Some people try to "game" the system, using dishonest means to try to increase a story's chance of getting to the main page.

Visualization Systems
There are four basic components in the Robertson and De Ferrari model: 1) the data model; 2) visualization specification; 3) visualization representation; and 4) the matching procedure. The model also specifies desired requirements for all of these components. The data model should be precise and functionally-rich with the data structure and the data fields explicitly specified.
Introduction to Data Modeling
The connectivity of a relationship describes the mapping of associated entity instances in the relationship. The values of connectivity are "one" or "many". The cardinality of a relationship is the actual number of related occurences for each of the two entities. The basic types of connectivity for relations are: one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many.

What's more, the model could help researchers better understand and optimize existing drugs. "It's difficult to figure out which genes are affected indirectly by a drug," says Collins. "You want to know what you're hitting to get better chemistry, stronger intellectual property, and understand side effects." Palsson points out that because the network can identify multiple ways to generate the same outcome, it may help drug companies come up with compounds that have the same effects--alternatives to statin drugs like Lipitor, for example--without violating their competitors' patents. James Collins , professor of biomedical engineering at Boston University, has already begun using network-level approaches to understanding cancer, and he says he will use Palsson's model in his research. "You can look at differentially expressed genes in a patient with prostate cancer," says Collins.

once several levels have been mastered, you can always apply your new skills on the vizster or the enron email networks. [ planarity.net ] an ideal game for those cold winter nights, based on the principles of good visualization of traditional vertice-edge network diagrams. players can click on the blue dots (vertices), & drag them around. one should then try to arrange the vertices so none of the lines (edges) intersect, so that a new level will appear.
“You can refine one module without changing all the rest of the system,” Phillips says, “whereas before, everything was kind of interlaced, and it was difficult to extract the behavior of a particular protein. Here, you can say, ‘Let me refine this,’ and then refine it again. That’s the power of modular programming.” Perhaps so, but biologists, busy working within their own discipline, aren’t likely to have time to comb through the latest advances in computer science in a search for similarities.
