Using rich symbols in Fireworks
What are rich symbols? In simple terms, a rich symbol in Fireworks CS3 is a design component with editable properties. Examples of rich symbols include resizable buttons with editable text labels, graphic borders with changeable stroke and colors, graphic symbols with multiple states or appearance schemes, and even styleable Flex components, which can be exported directly into MXML for a Flex application. You add a rich symbol to your document by dragging an instance from the new Common Library panel (Window > Common Library), and you change its properties using the new Symbol Properties panel (Window > Symbol Properties). In the past, I’ve written a lot of articles on submitting data to databases and web services but there’s another way to submit form data: via HTTP POST. In this scenario, you use a regular button object configured to submit to a web page via HTTP or you just use the HTTP submit button object and set the URL appropriately. Steve , a colleague of mine who works on LiveCycle Designer ES, wrote two posts about this technique a while back. I’ve frequently referred to it in my replies to your comments on various posts so I thought I would include the links in a more prominent place so they’re easier to find: One use of this could be to make submitting data to a database more secure* than exposing the database on the Internet (which is seldom a good idea).
Fireworks Auto Shapes were introduced in Fireworks MX 2004. They are unique shapes that can be placed in a Fireworks document, either through drag and drop from the Shapes panel or through an Auto Shape tool within the rectangle tool in the Tools bar, that can at any time be visually altered directly within that document using their control points. These control points are small interactive buttons (usually looking like a yellow diamond) that the user can interact with and thereby cause a change of appearance in the shape.
