Fictionalism is the view in philosophy according to which statements that appear to be descriptions of the world should not be construed as such, but should instead be understood as cases of "make believer", of pretending to treat something as literally true (a "useful fiction"). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictionalism

Computational theory of mind

In philosophy , a computational theory of mind names a view that the human mind and/or human brain is an information processing system and that thinking is a form of computing . The theory was proposed in its modern form by Hilary Putnam in 1961, and developed by the MIT philosopher and cognitive scientist (and Putnam's PhD student) Jerry Fodor in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Despite being largely repudiated in analytic philosophy in the 1990s (due to work by Putnam himself, John Searle, and others), the view is common in modern cognitive psychology and is presumed by many theorists of evolutionary psychology ; in the 2000s and 2010s the view has resurfaced in analytic philosophy (Scheutz 2003, Edelman 2008). [ full citation needed ] The computational theory of mind is the theory that the mind/brain is a computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connectionism Connectionism is a set of approaches in the fields of artificial intelligence , cognitive psychology , cognitive science , neuroscience , and philosophy of mind , that models mental or behavioral phenomena as the emergent processes of interconnected networks of simple units . There are many forms of connectionism, but the most common forms use neural network models. [ edit ] Basic principles

Working memory

Working memory is the system that actively holds multiple pieces of transitory information in the mind, where they can be manipulated. This involves execution of verbal and nonverbal tasks—such as reasoning and comprehension—and makes them available for further information-processing. [ 1 ] It is not the same as short term memory . Working memory includes subsystems that store and manipulate visual images or verbal information, as well as a central executive that coordinates the subsystems.

Introspection

Introspection is examination of one's own conscious thoughts and feelings . [ 1 ] In psychology the process of introspection relies exclusively on observation of one's mental state , while in a spiritual context it may refer to the examination of one's soul .

Cognitivism (psychology)

In psychology , cognitivism is a theoretical framework for understanding the mind that gained credence in the 1950s. The movement was a response to behaviorism, which cognitivists said neglected to explain cognition . Cognitive psychology derived its name from the Latin cognoscere , referring to knowing and information, thus cognitive psychology is an information processing psychology derived in part from earlier traditions of the investigation of thought and problem solving. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Behaviorists acknowledged the existence of thinking, but identified it as a behavior.

On Introspection

It seems to me that when we think about something, we're dealing with three memory stores: long-term memory, short-term memory and immediate memory.
