As if there is not enough up here (see our recent post about the Egyptian storage move and associated conservation work), this week we brought another quite large object into the lab, and it might be my new favorite object up here.
The lid of our* yellow stola coffin This is the lid that belongs to the late 21st/22nd Dynasty yellow coffin base which we recently treated here in the Artifact Lab. Due to its previous location in storage, I hadn’t been able to take a close look at it until this week. Now that I’ve gotten to spend a few days with the lid, I’ll tell you that it’s total eye candy. If you were impressed by the painted decoration on the base, the lid will give you even more to get excited about.
I only just started to examine and document the lid and I will continue to update the blog as I work on this object, so today I’m just going to mention a few things about it, and some of my favorite details so far. This coffin appears to have been made for a priestly official in the temple of Amun at Karnak, but it was never finished.
The hieroglyphic text that would have recorded the name of the owner was left blank, although it does bear the titles of priest ("god's father") and scribe. In addition, the coffin never received its outer coat of yellow varnish, leaving the colors, particularly the "Egyptian blue," as vivid as the day they were painted. While most colors used by the ancient Egyptians were simple mineral pigments, this bright blue is a ground glass-frit colored with copper. This process produced a remarkably stable blue and was prized throughout the ancient world. The sides of the coffin have been painted in a broad and lively hand, made more vivid by the lack of surface coating. On the proper left side of the coffin are images of Nut and Osiris, Anubis, Osiris, Re, and a winged scarab over a depiction of the evil serpent Apophis, his body cut with many knives. This papyrus belonged to the Mistress of the House and Chantress of Amun, Tanetshedkhons, a Theban noblewoman of the Twenty-first Dynasty.
The scroll is inscribed with portions of two funerary texts known as the "Litany of Re" and the "Amduat," or "Book of that which is in the Underworld. " The "Amduat", like the "Book of the Dead," is one of several guidebooks designed to aid the deceased in their perilous journey through the Underworld. These guidebooks provided descriptions of the Underworld, accompanied by illustrations, to familiarize the deceased with the challenges to be faces and to lessen their apprehension. Deux belles tombes de l’Ancien Empire ont été découvertes à Saqqara par une équipe de fouilles égyptienne dans le secteur de Gisr el-Moudir, à l’ouest de la pyramide de Djeser. Zahi Hawass, qui est le directeur de cette mission, a annoncé que ces deux tombes appartiennent à Shendoua et à son fils Khonsou. La fausse porte qui est dans un état de conservation remarquable, montre le défunt devant la table d’offrandes et porte les différents titres du propriétaire, un haut dignitaire durant la VIe dynastie, étant, entre autres, chef des scribes royaux et responsable des missions.
Dans la tombe de Shendoua, le puits funéraire est situé directement sous la fausse porte, à vingt mètres de profondeur. Il semble être intact et n’avoir pas été pillé. Like many of the most beautiful coffins of the Twenty-first Dynasty, this one has belonged to a high official from Thebes- Pashedkhonsu, high priest of Amun at Karnak. With the wealth and power of a de facto royal court centered at the great temple, the priests of Karnak had access to the finest goods for their own burials.
Pashedkhonsu is shown wearing the divine beard that associates him with Osiris, the god of the dead. His chest is covered with a representation of an elaborate floral collar, through which his clenched fists emerge. Scarabs and sacred images decorate the rest of the lid in designs modeled in plaster to give them a three-dimensional quality as if they were actual jewels.
