There are three reasons in particular as to why it makes sense to entertain the possibility of more turmoil than usual at this year’s G8 summit. Just yesterday night, over 300 protesters were arrested at Occupy Oakland after an estimated crowd of over 2000 marched throughout the downtown area of the city injuring cops, destroying fencing, and in one instance burning a flag.

Alison Cuddy, Mariame Kaba, Jaquanda Villegas, Jacinda Bullie, Shira Hassan, Ameena Matthews and Niambi Jaha-Echols Saturday’s screening of The Interrupters at the Chicago Cultural Center was packed to the gills with 300 people in attendance. The event honored six great Chicago women who work as mentors to young people facing violence and hardships in their neighborhoods, helping them to navigate the difficult terrain of the transition to adulthood. The screening was hosted by Alison Cuddy, host of Eight Forty-Eight on Chicago Public Radio and co-presented by WBEZ, WTTW Channel 11, ITVS, Chicago Foundation for Women, Kartemquin Films, and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Each guest received a gift bag that included an honorarium from Independent Television Service (ITVS), great films from Kartemquin Films and WTTW, ITVS Community Classroom DVDs for use in their work, and gift items from WBEZ, WTTW, and ITVS. What if Chicago had “a space where everyone could have a cultural experience,” as Shaeffer describes it—a place where adults could “spend time creatively” and socialize with their kids, instead of involving playdates and baby-sitters? I saw SHoP’s (Southside Hub of Production) intergenerational, multidisciplinary philosophy in action a week before the cultural center was set to open on October 1.
