We collected one of those eggs a while back, and it hatched right on time! This species takes about five months. She is as delicate as she looks. The stripes make it harder for predators to understand that the baby is actually one cohesive (and potentially tasty) animal and not just a series of disconnected colors, which also offers a very interesting glimpse into the ways that animals' minds work. Baby alligators. Older epaulette sharks (and alligators) have only faint traces of these stripes, since they have significantly fewer predators as fully grown adults. Earthworm life cycle – Earthworms. Baby kangaroo rejected by mom being hand-raised at Global Wildlife Center in Folsom. AP Photo/ Global Wildlife CenterThis June 8 photo released by the Global Wildlife Center shows Skippy, a red kangaroo joey, almost a month after he was found, rejected by his mother, in the kangaroo enclosure at a wildlife tourist attraction in Folsom, La.

Christina Cooper, manager of Global Wildlife Center, is using a kangaroo feeding nipple without a hole in it as a pacifier, and teaching Skippy how to hold it. FOLSOM -- Christina Cooper has been wearing a kangaroo lately -- a foundling named Skippy, who was rejected by his mother at a wildlife park in eastern Louisiana. Inside a canvas carryall over Cooper's shoulder is an artificial kangaroo pouch for the 6-month-old red kangaroo. It's demanding duty -- Skippy must be bottle fed every four hours, though he's starting to eat grass and other green stuff. Workers at Global Wildlife Center in Folsom found the joey, as young 'roos are called, on the ground May 13 in the area where about 40 red kangaroos live. Aisdprekshare / Tree Homes Unit Resources. Working as a naturalist, I’ve received tons of calls about injured animals and thought I’d share some of my knowledge with you about handling situations with baby birds, since it’s the most common one. Baby finch. Author photo. Even if it’s not spring where you are, it’s good information to put on the back burner of your brain if you’re at all inclined to go out into nature during that beautiful waking-up time. We get tons of calls every year about baby birds and just as many baby birds brought right in to us.

Baby birds of all species do not reach a certain age and then gracefully fly away from their nests into the high branches of the forest. Instead of learning to fly from the nest down, they actually learn to fly from the ground up. They spend days, even a week or two, running around on the ground and jumping into low branches until they have enough feathers and experience to fly longer distances. Just days or a week old, baby birds are all stomach. 1) Does it appear injured? The Emperor Penguin : Aptenodytes forsteri. Feeding the Emperor penguin baby. SCIENCE IN PICS: Green Turtle Hatching | Earth & Environment | Science. A green turtle hatchling emerges whilst rangers open up a nest to check for other hatchlings at Pulau Gulisan in Sabah, Malaysia.

(Matthew Oldfield) The Turtle Islands are located in the Sulu Sea off Sabah in Borneo and were gazetted as a national park in 1977 to protect the hawksbill and green turtles which use the islands as a nesting ground. The park comprises three small islands—Pulau Selingan, Pulau Bakkungan Kecil, and Pulau Gulisan. Pulau Selingan is the main nesting area for green turtles (Chelonia Mydas), while Pulau Gulisan is preferred by hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata).

Both species lay their eggs there throughout the year, particularly between July and October. Female green turtles go ashore to dig a deep hole with their hind flippers, where they lay 40 to 190 eggs, which they bury with sand before returning to the ocean. Park rangers collect these eggs for incubation to protect them from predation, for example by monitor lizards.

Ghost of a Grasshopper. No, Mr. Grasshopper has not yet died and got himself stuck in limbo, rather this picture "Ghost of a Grasshopper" is really the shed exoskeleton of the common locust! In case you have forgotten we found a grasshopper in our garden a couple of days back! To make a long story short, mum wanted me to kill it but I didnt' have the heart to squish it and I couldn't throw it away because they always fly back so I kept it, and it looks like Mr. Grasshopper is now going through puberty! A grashopper's life begins in stages, though quite unlike that of a butterfly. But as you can see... they only just get uglier and uglier with age... sigh. Baby beluga whale born in Vancouver, BC, aquarium. The Associated PressAurora, a 20-year-old Beluga whale, swims with her calf after giving birth at the Vancouver Aquarium in Vancouver, B.C. on Sunday.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- A baby beluga whale has been born at the aquarium in Vancouver, British Columbia. Twenty-one-year-old Aurora gave birth Sunday to a female calf after several hours of labor as members of the public watched. The yet-to-be-named calf swam up to the water's surface for its first breath at 3:39 p.m. The calf is the second born at the aquarium during the past year. Last June, Aurora became a grandmother when her daughter Qila gave birth to a calf named Tiqa. Aurora gave birth to Qila in 1995. There are now six beluga whales at the Vancouver aquarium. The birth comes within weeks of the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Wash., losing both of its belugas. "This really was textbook -- it was just phenomenal," Clint Wright, the aquarium's vice-president of operations, told The Canadian Press.
