Switch to circular needle when you have enough sts to fit comfortably on needle. Using double-point needle and CC, CO 4 sts. Work 3 rounds in I-Cord. Next Round: Continuing in I-Cord, [k1, yo, k1] in each st. 12 sts. Round 1 [MC]: [K1, yos] to end. Divide sts between 3 double-point needles to begin working in the round. I give all the credit to her brilliant cables… Requires; Heavy worsted weight yarn, 5 mm circular and double pointed needles, stitch marker, tapestry needle. NOTES: 11 stitch cable = place six stitches on holder and hold to back. K2, p1, k2 and then p1, k2, p1, k2 from cable needle. Rd = round k = knit p = purl yo = yarn over Cast on 104 stitches and join into round. Work back and forth on 2 needles as follows: Row 1 [WS]: P4. Row 2 [RS]: [Kfb] 4 times. 8 sts. Divide sts evenly between 4 needles (2 sts on each needle) and join to begin working in the round. When I asked her who had made it for her, she looked at me like I was crazy like a bag of wet weasels and said "The store? " Well. I grabbed my camera and took a picture of it, then went stash diving until I found a skein of yarn that would work. then sketched out what I wanted, then I knit a swatch and knit the beast up. After that, because I was so pleased and because I have a brand spankin' new copy of Knit Visualizer (which I love with a deep and burning affection.) (For anybody worried about copyright, I assure you that my "copy" is merely inspired by and eventually rather different from the original hat...and that there are no worries.) An Unoriginal Hat. Work in 2x2 Rib until work measures 1 inch. K 1 round. Work short rows as follows: Row 1 [RS]: K50, W&T. K 1 round, working remaining wraps together with wrapped sts. Cabled Band Using Crochet Cast On and continuing from sts on needle with RS facing, CO 18 sts.

Working sts of hat tog with sts of cabled band as indicated, work cabled band as follows. Work all rows of Chart A 6 times. Remove waste yarn from CO edge of band and graft ends of band together. Crown With RS facing and beginning at point where band was grafted, pick up and k 132 sts (3 sts for every 4 rows) along upper edge of cabled band. Tam of Rassilon. People have asked for the pattern to this so here it is.

The original tam pattern is not mine; it was made by Angela Wu and posted here at knitty.com. However since I made a few changes to it I will post the pattern for what I did here. I made a few changes to the charts from what I knitted, to correct some things that didn't turn out as well as I hoped. These changes should get rid of the white bits in the decrease rows, and should make the outside circle more circular. I've included the Celtic knotwork border pattern as a separate chart since it's not a part of the original design and some people might not want to include it. Charts: I'll refer to the charts as A, B, and C in the order they appear. Pattern: Gauge:20sts = 4 inches on the larger needles. Using a 16-inch size 3 (US) needle cast on 96 sts in main color, place marker, and join in the round being careful not to twist.
