“Why are people puzzled over the meaning of that word, fascism?” Asked Peter Carroll, a historian of the Spanish civil war at Stanford University. The Foreign Daughter - Words Without Borders. In this excerpt from her novel The Foreign Daughter, Najat El Hachmi's narrator has resolved to give in to familial pressures to marry, comparing her situation to that of Mundeta Ventura, a character from the Monserrat Roig novel Ramona, adéu.

The Foreign Daughter - Words Without Borders

The first novel in a trilogy, and told from a feminist perspective, it depicts the lives of women in a family living in the Eixample, a district of Barcelona that lies between the old city and what were once outlying towns, and whose Modernist-inspired architecture includes Gaudí structures. As the narrator relates her situation, she meditates on her arrival in Catalunya, the foreignness of her mother's language, and her situation between two worlds. I no longer read. It’s A Man’s World – The Male Gaze and the Film Industry

A post by Sugar Spice brought to my attention the writings of Laura Mulvey, the film theorist who first came up with the idea of a male gaze in cinema. After reading her essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”, I began to look at the film industry in a new light. Today, there is definitely an inequality between men and women working in the film industry. The Male Gaze: How Women's Position in Cinema Has Evolved Over the Last Few Years. Women have undoubtedly made their mark on the medium, but they have also been relegated to playing second fiddle to men in such major capacities as producing and directing. Representations of women in film have often been a point of controversy, especially after Laura Mulvey's essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" in which she offered up the theory of the male gaze. Mulvey's theory posits that female representations in cinema are created to maximize male pleasure. According to a study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, in 2013, female characters comprised only 15 percent of all protagonists and just 30 percent of all speaking characters in the top-grossing 100 films. The results were even lower behind-the-scenes as women only accounted for 6 percent of directors and 10 percent of writers working on the top-grossing 250 films in 2013.

In Spain this past May, the usually dull and boring elections to the European Union’s Parliament produced a sudden shock to the political system.

Fighting the new fascism: Juan Carlos Monedero on PODEMOS, Spain’s new political force

A new two-month-old party led by a 35-year-old, pony-tailed political scientist, appeared out of nowhere—but clearly from the Left—to sweep up a surprising 8 percent of the votes. The result was good to win five European seats, transforming the infant organization into the country’s 4th largest political force. One of the party’s founders, political scientist Juan Carlos Monedero, spoke with us in late August. Por qué hacen botellón los jóvenes.

Photo MADRID — On Jan. 2, 1492, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon — known as the Catholic Monarchs — occupied Granada, completing their conquest of Moorish Spain. Ever since, Spain has always had a government — and occasionally two, when Napoleon invaded in 1808, and during the 1936 to 1939 civil war that split it.

But never during those more than five centuries was it ever without any. That is, until Dec. 20 last year, when elections failed to give any party the majority needed to form a government and all attempts at a coalition failed. For those of us accustomed to more direct suffrage, it is not easy to understand how democratic representation works in Spain.
