There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get started! 1. Make sure there’s a direct light source. Before I started on the drawing for this tutorial, the first thing I did was set up a lamp pointing at my still life from just a few feet away. I also turned off all the other lights in the room to increase contrast and clarify each shadow. It’s extremely important to make good lighting for yourself when you’re drawing indoors. 2. This is the best way I’ve found to start a drawing, and it’s pretty easy too. Store-bought viewfinders work too. Move the viewfinder around until you’ve found the best composition possible and tape it in place.

So, we were obviously pretty stoked to find a way to incorporate both — for cheap! — in an amazing DIY project for your apartment. Inspired by the work of artist Nancy Ramirez, two stellar Refinery29 interns collaborated on this easy-does-it way to spice up an empty wall. From the moment we spied this Nancy Ramirez painting on Pinterest, we were smitten. Assemble your paints and squeeze a quarter-size amount of each color onto your palette. To incorporate all of our colors, we used one at a time, rinsing our brush between each and blending until we covered the canvas. Once you've covered the canvas, let it dry for a few minutes.
