Nifty tools for your Asus Eee PC. Pimpmyeee pimpmyeee is a bash script that puts together an assortment of useful tweaks. Using it, you can easily enable the Full Desktop, add third-party software repositories, enable additional codecs, add a couple of desktop themes, and install scripts to turn the webcam on and off. Better yet, pimpmyeee has a very simple structure, so even if you are not an expert in bash scripting, you can easily tweak the script to your liking. You can, for example, modify the script so it also offers an option to install the latest version of OpenOffice.org. To do this, add a new menu option right under the "(4) Add camera on and off scripts" item: echo; echo "(4) Add camera on and off scripts" echo; echo "(5) Install OpenOffice.org 2.4.1" Locate the following code segment: menu # Reset the menu ;; "Q" | "q" ) # Quit this wonderous world of EeeNirvana Insert the following code right after the double semi-colon (::): cd desktop-integration sudo dpkg -i openoffice* echo "All done!

USB hub To install USB devices internally, more USB connections were needed. Having two storage devices, flash drive and SD card reader, on the same upstream connection is not a good idea speed-wise, therefore I put one on a separate hub.

The reason I choose to hook into the USB-port and leave the spare mini PCI-express USB connection alone is that I want to: For the type of hub, I went for as small as I could find. Top and bottom: Eee PC Tips: A crash course in Linux - Download Squad. So you're an early adopter and you've run out to buy yourself Asus's $400 Eee PC because it seemed like a great price for a fully functional 2 pound computer that's about the size of a typical hardcover book (and far smaller than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).

But the innovative easy to use interface might get old pretty quickly if you want to do more than surf the web and create letters, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint style presentations for your friends telling them how cool you are because you have an Eee PC while they don't. Asus includes instructions for loading Windows XP onto the Eee PC, but it requires an external DVD drive, some drive compression, and you know, a copy of Windows XP. Curiously, Asus does not include any instructions for unlocking the built-in potential of Xandros Linux, the operating system that ships with the Eee PC.

But as we mentioned in this week's Squadcast, it just takes a little bit of work to unlock this machine's potential. Great. Whew. Dell unveils the XPS M1530 laptop | Crave : The gadget blog. Tuesday morning Dell officially announced the XPS M1530 laptop, a 15-inch version of the wildly popular 13-inch XPS M1330. Of course, pretty much every detail about this new system has already leaked , but we're still pretty excited, as the XPS M1330 was easily one of our favorite laptops of 2007. With a shockingly sophisticated design for the usually middle-of-the-road Dell, an LED backlit screen (the new 15-inch version has a CCFL panel instead), thin profile (less than 1 inch in the front), and slot-loading DVD drive, it was hard not to love the 13-inch version, even if some fans had trouble getting them in a timely manner.

"From our first behind-closed-doors peek...we've been impressed with the emphasis on the user experience in this superthin, high-end laptop. " The new 15-inch M1530 looks and feels like a slightly bigger brother, and even better, it starts at a very moderate $999 (the 13-inch version debuted at $1,299).
