What is Music? Why Do We Put Meaning in Music? Dr. Seuss, The Lorax "Let it Grow!" Coca-Cola - It's Beautiful - Official :60. Top 20 Political Songs. Top 20 Political Songs: Glad to Be Gay. Written for a London Gay Pride parade in 1976, Tom Robinson's song has become a gay anthem for Britain.

Top 20 Political Songs: Glad to Be Gay

First performed by the British punk rock/New Wave group the Tom Robinson Band, it was sharply critical of British attitudes towards homosexuality. Robinson, a former choirboy who became part of the London punk scene following a troubled childhood, was interested in the politics of gay liberation and inspired by the Sex Pistols. When he wrote "Don't try to kid us that if you're discreet/You're perfectly safe as you walk down the street", he was picking apart the hypocrisy of a society whose wider attitudes had yet to catch up with its own legislation. Though homosexuality had been decriminalised in the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, the lyrics highlight violence against gay people and negative attitudes in the media -- in fact, BBC Radio 1 proved the point by refusing to broadcast "Glad to be Gay" on its Top 40 chart show.

In his book Lennon in America, the Beatles biographer and writer Geoffrey Giuliano wrote that "Imagine" was "anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic . . . but because it's sugar-coated, it's accepted".

Amid the ferment of anti-war protests, Lennon envisaged a world without borders, where there would be "Nothing to kill or die for/And no religion too". For the opening track on his 1971 album Imagine, Lennon was inspired by his partner Yoko Ono's poetry collection Grapefruit, which alluded to her wartime childhood in Japan. He composed it on a Steinway upright piano which was later sold to George Michael for more than $2m, who donated it to the Beatles museum in Liverpool. Next: Where Have All the Flowers Gone. First performed by the Coventry-based band The Special AKA, "Free Nelson Mandela" was released in 1984 as a protest against the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela who had by then spent 22 years in prison.

The composer Jerry Dammers, who played keyboard and wrote lyrics for the band, admitted he had known little of Mandela's situation until the previous year, and his song's success took him by surprise. Having imposed a ban on sporting engagements with South Africa during the 1950s and 1960s, and joined UN sanctions as a condemnation of the apartheid regime, Britain, under Margaret Thatcher, was pursuing a more moderate line in the early Eighties, mirroring US policy. The song reached No 9 in the UK charts and was immensely popular in Africa, where it was played at ANC rallies. More recently, a version was performed at the finale of the Nelson Mandela 90th birthday tribute in London's Hyde Park, in June 2008. Next: The Times They are a-Changin'.
