While visibility of queer characters may be at an all-time high, Hollywood's reaction to LGBT-centric films proves homophobia lurks somewhere behind the scenes.

Op-ed: What Is Hollywood Still So Scared Of?

LGBT representation in Hollywood could mistakenly seem all the rage these days. From out teens on shows like Glee to gay dads Mitch and Cam on Modern Family and lesbian moms Lena and Stef on The Fosters, it isn’t hard to list characters in prime-time TV who register somewhere on the rainbow scale. And the current cavalcade of films screening at the local cineplex is no different. Dramas, comedies, and even the occasional action flick often find some way to squeeze in a lesbian sister, questioning son, or gay best friend. The park is one long block long and one short block wide, paved in stone with several colorful flower beds, ringed by New York office towers, and is now the epicenter of the Occupy Wall Street movement … headquarters and camping site for an America, after decades of politically snoozing, is suddenly waking up.

Photo: Mark Seliger/Paramount Pictures In the run-up to Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the fictional blowhard TV newsman opines: “I can only imagine it’s a charming documentary on the low-barometric pressure that often occurs in Ireland, resulting in various shades of overcast skies, as the Irish are known for having a strange obsession with their weather. I imagine this is a big win for them. So good job, boyo!” (To pick at just one of his points, in classically absurd Burgundian “expertise,” men from the Emerald Isle do not typically refer to each other as “boyo”—unless they want to accuse an Irish friend of being Welsh, that is.) La scène était à la fois une des plus tristes du film et une de celles où les téléspectateurs pouvaient le plus se reconnaître (peut-être était-elle si triste justement parce qu’elle nous rappelait ces moments de détresse 2.0). But in Korea they recently came up with an idea that will probably make us change our minds. The WI-FI poster, or the Poster 2.0 is a traditional poster “pimped” and transformed into a wireless hotspot. The technology is embedded or, better, hidden behind the poster, and it’s automatically activated once a user approaches the hotspot prompting the user to connect to the open network that has the name of the movie that is being promoted.

Once the connection is activated, the user gets access to the movie trailer in HD and a few extra content goodies that make the experience compelling and sticky, including the possibility to actually purchase the tickets to the show itself.
