We believe that primary documents can draw students into history in ways that challenge and excite them. One of the most exciting shifts in the Common Core State Standards is the increased use of content-rich, informational text. Let’s think about this. Differentiation

Because different students come to classrooms with different experiences, research demonstrates that successful teachers vary their instructional strategies accordingly. According to Carol A. Tomlinson, “whether teachers differentiate content, process, products or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction” (Tomlinson (2000) Differentiation of Instruction in the Elementary Grades). The DBQ Project actively works to differentiate the process, the products and the learning environment while maintaining a high standard for reading and writing about meaty historical questions. We are strong advocates of providing rigorous learning opportunities but we structure our lessons to allow all students access.

Reading Like A Historian

Each lesson revolves around a central historical question and features sets of primary documents designed for groups of students with diverse reading skills and abilities. This curriculum teaches students how to investigate historical questions by employing reading strategies such as sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading. Instead of memorizing historical facts, students evaluate the trustworthiness of multiple perspectives on historical issues. They learn to make historical claims backed by documentary evidence. It's not just how darn cute the kids look, or how much the parents oooh and ahhh over what a great event it is, (we all need those pats on the back) but it's the fact that I know how much the kids have gotten out of this project and how hard they've worked to get to this special day.
