The Undue Subdivision of Land Prevention Act 1885 was a law passed by the Parliament of Queensland in that year to prevent overcrowding and urban degradation in cities and towns in Queensland , especially in Brisbane . The law is a noteworthy example of early efforts by Australian legislators to control urban development and avoid the appearance of slums .
An action plan to celebrate suburbia and protect its distinctive qualities will be unveiled today by the think-tank Demos .

What is so rotten underneath the orderly facade of Suburbia? Driving down the street in the suburbs of Toronto, I see wealth, safety, order and cleanliness. Even the smallest house has ample room (no tar-paper shacks here), plenty of amenities (colour TV, phones and cars are de rigeur), the lawns are neat and the streets are well maintained and properly planned.
