Master of advanced studies urban design - Marc Angélil, Professor of Architecture and Design. The Master of Advanced Studies in Urban Design ETH is a research and design laboratory for testing new models for the pro-active development of emerging territories within today’s rapidly-urbanizing world. As the making of the city is increasingly fractured by competing interests the development of new modes of urban production becomes a prerequisite for considered action.
The MAS in Urban Design produces a new generation of design professionals—one equipped to deal with topics beyond the discipline exactly through a mastery of those things within its bounds. 01: About the program The MAS in Urban Design is a one-year postgraduate master’s program in research and design. Globalization is profoundly reshaping the scale, configuration and functional mix of our cities. This not only affects the historic urban centres but also the suburban, peri-urban and hinterland regions beyond. Multiple centres, hubs and nodes increasingly supplement the recognizable city centres. These are drawn together in a network of communication infrastructures (rail, road, air, water, internet) to form complex polycentric urban regions that extend far into once rural hinterlands. The 2-days conference will adress these issues under three themed blocks: urban transformation, high tech - low tech and regional neighbours. ETH Zürich - Städte und Entwicklung. This year, we are seeking integrated design, planning, environmental restoration and engineering responses that address border, gateway and edge/fringe conditions in cities worldwide.
Proposals should address urban sites currently facing chronic liveability challenges that are largely the result of a city’s location on a physical, political, cultural or economic border. Proposals should be implementable. In addition to a cash prize for the winning team, we will be engaging a local organization to help advance the proposed project. Responses can range from a strategic framework to a surgical micro-response, from a whole landscape system to a single piece of architecture. The competition is open as of 16 April to students worldwide. You can find more information here: POST+Capitalist City #1Shop. With successive declines on the financial markets, recent times have seen a growing interest in the theoretical debate about alternatives to the ongoing capitalist system.
Gathering international thinkers from all walks of political life, the diagnosis on the ongoing economic crisis situation tends to demonstrate that the system as it is nowadays needs to be rethought and perhaps re-established globally. The recent Wall Street protests and the associated developing movements around the world indicates the depth to which the inequality generated by the economic system and the demand for global change has penetrated the popular consciousness. – The financial crisis is no longer a matter for the decision makers and having reached the masses is transforming the political and national – or trans-national – spheres. WHAT IF… ? What if the change was tomorrow? What would be the characteristics of a system not based on profit making?
First competition cycle: #1Shop LAUNCHING DATE April 1, 2012. Call for papers | Middle-Class Housing in Perspective. The construction of the middle-class city During the second half of the 20th century, the middle classes played a fundamental role in the growth and transformation of cities, not just in Europe and America but also in countries all over the world. Specific residential models that were developed to meet their housing needs and social and domestic aspirations significantly contributed to shape the urban built environment.
In addition, their settling influenced the transformation of major urban sectors producing new spatial divisions and radical changes in the field of public services and infrastructure, leaving traces that still mark the contemporary urban landscape. Homes, residential buildings and neighbourhoods built for the middle classes mirrored the urban and political changes of the time. They constituted the focus of planning policies aiming at reinforcing a broad political consensus, and occupied the centre stage of an expanding real-estate market. Transformative dynamics Calendar.
