The local chemist that has to place a print ad next to a national chain in the local paper. Globally and every day small businesses destroy their credibility because either they don’t have access to professional designers, or the designs they have are simply bad. At the same time we know that consumers – assaulted daily by great design from companies with huge marketing budgets – now have a have a very high degree of visual literacy.

Thus, the concept behind Tweak, as founder Jerry Kennelly puts it, is to “democratise design”. Put simply, with an armoury of millions of pieces of design and a CMS three years in the making, Tweak plans to disrupt both the print and design industry, as well as a section of the magazine and newspaper advertising business. Irishman Fergus Hurley made a wise decision when he chose to drop out of his MIT course three years ago to seek Silicon Valley success. His venture Focal Labs has just been acquired by RadiumOne. Hurley, who, incidentally is a member of the ITLG in Silicon Valley, dropped out of his EECS PhD at MIT and, as he says himself, "bought a one-way ticket" to Silicon Valley. Early stage start-up activity in Ireland among highest in Europe - Start Ups - Start-Ups. Despite a decrease in the level of early stage entrepreneurial activity this year (6.8pc) reflecting the current economic challenges, the rate of early stage entrepreneurial activity in Ireland continues to be one of the highest within Europe, according to the latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). The rate of established entrepreneurs among the adult population (8.6pc) is also high, on a par with Australia (8.5pc) and slightly ahead of the US (7.7pc). Findings of the 2010 GEM report show that necessity-driven entrepreneurship has grown significantly (32pc).

While this phenomenon is new to Ireland, it is not to some other innovation-driven economies.
