This is a story about a project spiraling out of control. All I really wanted was a different look for our bed. We have a simple rectangular upholstered headboard that I picked up a few years ago from a big-box store somewhere, and I decided I’d just pick up some fabric, throw it over that headboard and call it a day. Then I accidentally read too many DIY blogs, and decided that if I’m doing this project, we might as well make the headboard a more exciting shape than that stodgy rectangle, and upholster our own.

At this point, I was already out of my league. But then, I saw this blog where a guy actually upholstered his entire bed himself. The inspiration? So I called my handy contractor (who was sitting next to me on the couch) and put in a request. After he cut it, we noticed this fun coincidence. Not good. The end! Monthly Round-Ups. Diy tufted headboard. As I said last week, this isn’t my best project. I had high hopes, but it just didn’t turn out exactly like that picture in my head. But it’s okay~it’s good for you to see that not all diy projects turn out “look at this, it’s amazing and soooo easy!” :) And do you know how you pore and labor over something and that is ALL that is on your mind and it seems that every detail matters, but then once you get it up in the room, you realize it’s not as bad as you thought?

And I’m NOT re-doing it, at least not this year. We had this piece of pegboard downstairs from the previous owners and I was going to use it in the garage or down in the office, but I thought.. " Next, I counted and marked off where we wanted the buttons/tufts to be and circled them. We are in the process of switching the boys’ rooms around, so I had 2 twin foam toppers we were going to get rid of that I saved exactly for this: and then poked some thread through my marked holes to show where to tuft on the other side: How To Make A Diamond Tufted Upholstered Headboard. DIY Button Tufted Headboard. Following in the footsteps of some great bloggers, I made by very own button tufted headboard! If you're looking for a tutorial to follow, I highly recommend the ones over at Little Green Notebook and Brick City Love. My headboard took elements from both of those tutorials, and I must say that they were very helpful. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd just share some photos of my process and a few notes on things I learned as I went along.

I'm not sure where the idea for this headboard first happened. I must have seen something similar and got it stuck in my head. For my California King mattress, I ended up making the headboard two feet tall and six feet wide. While other people have simply hung their headboards on the wall, I didn't really trust myself to be able to hang it securely enough to stand up to regular use. For my 6ft long headboard, I only purchased 2.5 yards of dark gray upholstery weight chenille fabric. Home Decorating Fabric.
