Clothing, furniture, technology, even our food is a product of production farming and machines. Our industrial process is incredibly fast, high volume and possesses volatile consequences on our society and environment. A Barcelona designer, Victor Castanera, visualizes an alternate production and creation model within the parameters of our natural habitat where he explores how nature can move us to create a sensorial, sustainable and experiential process. The vision inculcates the possibility of growing a small industry that permits the simple creation of a series of products taking advantage and leveraging nature in its simplest forms, without damaging it in the process.

They have been developing an exciting new material from waste wood. The project has been a collaboration between the RCA and the American Hardwood Export Council. They have also been helped along by Benchmark Furniture who kindly let them spend a week in their factory as well as craftsmen geniuses Sebastian Cox, Liam Treanor, Mike Bradley and Will Reed. The Well Proven Chair began with the discovery that within industry between 50-80% waste is created in processing raw timber into usable products. Based in Vienna they develop and design products, furniture, installations and more, with a focus on experiments, context and conceptual thinking. Balancing between hand craft and technology, they envision whole systems, processes and new production methods that indicate sustainability and the relevance of nature. Part of their Design process is to examine, experiment, analyse and reject. This critical view often questions and affects the relation between producer, object and owner. "Why and what for" are often the main concerns before a new project comes into being, whilst "What if" ceases in new interpretations and different possibilities. Their Results often make use of unexpected materials and are often characterized by external inputs, for example the condition of the weather or the usage of the existing.

Computer Augmented Craft 2011 – ongoing Christian Fiebig is a German designer exploring the possibilities of the latest computer prototyping and manufacturing technologies – utilising digital systems as a means to effect the design and production of objects. Fiebig often works collaboratively with scientists and computer programmers to develop experimental projects that intersect craft and industrial production.
In ‘Computer Augmented Craft’ Fiebig has created a digital interface that recommends decisions to the designer whilst he/she works. The computer maps the making process, via a webcam, instantly generating other formal possibilities based on the designers chosen parameters. Produced with the support of developers David Menting and Martin Schneider. Flat Form 2011 – ongoing Christian Fiebig’s second project within ‘The Machine’ exhibition, ‘Flat Form,’ transforms virtual shapes into tangible objects.

Graduating from the Royal College of Art from the department of Design Products in June 2012 he presented The Thread Wrapping Machine. The project is a tool to joint different types of material with only the glue-coated thread as its cement. Through using this construction method, many different materials can be joined to form objects and spaces such as wood, steel, plastic, bricks.

Gallery. Termoformando sin termoformadora. Este semestre me tocó trabajar en la universidad en un proyecto de Food Design para Pepsico. Nuestro brief era “Thinking Beyond Packaging”. Mi diseño fue bastante sencillo, 5 empaques rigidos que se unen formando un circulo simbolizando la unidad en una fiesta. El reto fue el hacer el prototipo. Mientras mis compañeros trabajaban con cartón, cortes, dobleces, y formas bastantes geométricas, yo me adentre en el mundo de los plásticos, empaques que debían calzar, formas orgánicas y un proceso que yo nunca había hecho: el termoformado.
Mi problema principal y lo que me llevó a escribir este artículo, es que no encontré termoformadoras a una distancia razonable de mi casa, y en la universidad tampoco tienen. Con ayuda de Diego, desarmamos dos tostadores de pan, y re-ordenamos las resistencias para que quedaran todas viendo hacia el mismo lado. Ya re-ordenadas las resistencias, se soldaron entre ellas y se sujetaron a una caja de madera con algunas pijas.
