Transportation. We are wondering why it is that car manufacturers are tripping over each other inventing boring and redundant “super modern” and “high design” cars, when the end result is a sea of lookalikes. One can no longer recognize a “premium” make from a lower-end car, certainly not by distinctive and recognizable design features. They are unimaginative, uninspiring and suffer from a serious case of follow-itis.
As opposed to being leaders and, in particular, design leaders. We see design tweaks and add-on features advertised as if they were a revolution when in fact, there’s nothing really significantly new or exciting. Our hopes are up a bit with a sighting of the carbon fiber-bodied “Bella Figura” Bugnotti. We are all for going back to the basics, to looking at the best and most beautiful models of the past and resurrecting them. Imagine if we could again drive cars this cool? V.O.W N°26 // Melvin the Machine. Photo © HEYHEYHEY V.O.W N°26 (27 June - 3 July 2011) We think of innovation and invention as highly engineered, complex systems that are built by some mad scientist in a remote space.
The process results in long and layered equations, drawings and an endless source of references illustrated in a step by step process to further explain the construction of the device or machine. We have familiarized ourselves with this elaborate system through Einstein, Sherlock Holmes, even the coyote as he tries to invent ways to capture the road runner. For this week's VOW, we have brought you one of those diagrams to life.
It is highly engineered, highly interactive and social but the actual task of the machine might deceive its purpose and vision. We introduce you to Melvin the Machine, the leading attraction of the 2010 Dutch Design Week. Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine is best described as a Rube Goldberg machine with a twist. Boost of Friends – Brendan’s Flush Evo & Thomas’ Beefy STI | Canibeat. Photography by Matt Kwok & Words by Josh Wilson for Canibeat.com One of the biggest car model rivalries right now is the Evo vs the STI.
Both are boosted, All Wheel Drive, sedans and well the similarities keep going on and on but we’ll stop there. With such a divide between the two followings you rarely get the chance to see them in the same frame but Matt Kwok has managed to pull it off with two friends who have put the rivalry to rest. The two met when Thomas Ng needed to have his STI detailed spotless and took a trip over to Project Detail that is ran by Brendan Siu. They hit it off as both of them had the same mission with cars – something with some stance but also something that could dance around a track.
Both have pulled this off and even manage to drive these cars in the harsh Canada winters. What look like foggy landscapes from alien planets, or maybe even the moody landscapes in some Rococo era painting, are actually carefully planned images of aquariums. Artist Kim Keever takes fishtanks and using plaster and other materials crafts landscapes within. He then fills the tanks with water, sets up lighting and photographs his aquatic set while adding in powders which form clouds and fog. The results are stunningly surreal… and sometimes even very realistic. See Also Tragic Miniatures in the Wake of Destruction By their nature Keever’s images are temporal, his simulated clouds and fog only lingering for a short period as it meanders through his artificial landscapes.
