Shift workers have low serotonin, poorer sleep - Health. Rotating shift workers tend to have lower levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, leading to disturbed sleep patterns, suggests new research. Researchers at the University of Buenos Aires studied 683 men of self-reported European ancestry, comparing 437 day workers to 246 rotating shift workers. Day and night work periods started at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. All of the subjects stuck to the same schedule throughout the study, which is in the Aug. 1 issue of the journal Sleep. Shift workers' serotonin levels, measured through blood tests, were much lower than the levels of workers on regular day schedules, found the study, led by Carlos Pirola. Shift workers were also found to have greater hip-to-waist ratios, higher cholesterol and insulin levels, increased blood pressure and higher triglyceride levels.

Low levels of serotonin are associated with conditions such as anger, depression and anxiety. Portal Christmas Win. How Gullible Are We? In light of the recent (near) hysteria over Dr.Oz’s claim that apple juice contains arsenic (yes, really!)

Precision Nutrition vs. The USDA?

The iconic USDA’s Food Pyramid is perhaps the most widely recognized nutritional education resource in the world. Designed in 1992, the recommendations presented in the earliest food pyramid were widely adopted and became the gold standard for nutritional advice. Based on presenting a graphical depiction of 6 “food groups”: grains (recommended 6-11 servings/day), vegetables (3-5 servings/day), fruit (2-4 servings/day), meat/beans/nuts (recommended 2-3 servings/day), dairy (2-3 servings per day), and fats/oils/sweets (use sparingly), this pyramid summed up the USDA’s dietary advice in one simple picture. And because of its ease of use, it was widely adopted, distributed, and taught to everyone from children at schools to adults seeking nutrition counseling.

The only problem with the original food pyramid is this: the advice contained in this simple picture was flawed. Notes: Eat these amounts from each food group daily. The reasons for the trend aren’t clear. Allergy or intolerance? Food intolerances occur in the digestive system, where, for various reasons, the body is unable to properly break down certain foods. That causes such symptoms as gas, bloating and diarrhea.

But not all intolerances cause digestive symptoms. A food allergy is an abnormal response to food triggered by the immune system. While people with an intolerance to certain foods might get gastrointestinal or other symptoms, they can still eat them without serious consequences. Diagnosing food allergies.
