Neuron.jpg (JPEG Image, 600x592 pixels) Earth-like planet found in distant sun's habitable zone. For the first time, astronomers using NASA's Kepler space telescope have confirmed a roughly Earth-size planet orbiting a sun-like star in the so-called "Goldilocks" zone where water can exist in liquid form on the surface and conditions may be favorable for life as it is known on Earth.

Earth-like planet found in distant sun's habitable zone

Along with the confirmed extra-solar planet, one of 28 discovered so far by Kepler, researchers today also announced the discovery of 1,094 new exoplanet candidates, pushing the spacecraft's total so far to 2,326, including 10 candidate Earth-size worlds orbiting in the habitable zones of their parent stars. Additional observations are required to tell if a candidate is, in fact, an actual world.

But astronomers say a planet known as Kepler-22b, orbiting a star some 600 light years from Earth, is the real thing. Images And Soundbites That Changed The World: Carl Sagan. A First View of Earth. Solar Eclipse over the USA. Solar Eclipse over the USA Jan. 27, 2012: Mark your calendar.

Solar Eclipse over the USA

On Sunday, May 20th, the sun is going to turn into a ring of fire. It's an annular solar eclipse--the first one in the USA in almost 18 years. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the sun, but the lunar disk is not quite wide enough to cover the entire star. Five Awesome Images of the Solar Eclipse, 2012. If you’ve never been lucky – or determined – enough to have seen a solar eclipse, here are a selection of five stunning images sourced from across the web that depict unique vantage points of the annual solar eclipse that took place yesterday on May 20/21 2012.

The start of the Universe should be modeled not as a Big Bang but more like water freezing into ice, according to a team of theoretical physicists at the University of Melbourne and RMIT University.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: Graphene

According to much recent research, graphene, an atomic plane of graphite, could change the world as we know it. With such outstanding and extraordinary properties, graphene could enhance such industries as technology, medicine and engineering, with many other opportunities being discussed for it too. It could make stronger plastics, lighter aircrafts, smaller mobile phones, thinner televisions, and even replace the silicon chip in computers. It can conduct heat and electricity better than any other substance we know. It is strong enough to hold the weight of an elephant on a sheet as thin as cling film, and is flexible enough to distort up to 20 percent of its size without breaking.

Scientists May Be Closing in on the Higgs Boson Particle. Particle physics has played out over the last half-century or so like a seasoned crime drama: scientists would use accepted theories and their deductive skills to predict whether a particle should exist, build colossal particle accelerators to find it, then catch it red-handed by smashing atoms together in a spectacular final act.

Scientists May Be Closing in on the Higgs Boson Particle

For the denouement, Nobel prizes are usually awarded. That sequence has been played out time and again, but the investigation is progressing at glacial pace in pursuit of one high-profile culprit: the Higgs boson. Wat is in hemelsnaam een Higgs Boson? Grote opwinding over het Cern en het Higgs boson. Higgs Boson Discovery: Why It`s Important to All of Us - Cloud Computing.

It€™s impossible to overstate the importance of the Higgs Boson, the discovery of which was announced at CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire). Without this particle, you wouldn€™t exist. For that matter, the universe wouldn€™t exist. That€™s because the Higgs Boson creates a field that gives other particles mass, giving weight and shape to all the matter we see in the universe Or, to describe the indescribable, what the Higgs Boson does is create a field of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence, and while they€™re in existence those virtual particles provide mass to other particles that are able to interact with them. Ready for the latest oddity to come out of the 3D printing craze? A startup wants to create 3D printed meat to fill the human craving for animal protein without continuing to take an environmental toll on the planet. According to Cnet, billionaire Peter Thiel is directing between $250,000 to $350,000 from his philanthropic foundation toward Missouri-based Modern Meadow to create the bio-printed meat. Scientists Create New Ear Using 3D Printing And Living Cell Injections. WASHINGTON -- Printing out body parts? Cornell University researchers showed it's possible by creating a replacement ear using a 3-D printer and injections of living cells.

The work reported Wednesday is a first step toward one day growing customized new ears for children born with malformed ones, or people who lose one to accident or disease. It's part of the hot field of tissue regeneration, trying to regrow all kinds of body parts. 3Doodler First 3D Printing Pen. 3Doodler is the world’s first and only 3D printing pen that can draw in the air.
