Section 12: UNIX Network Basics

| TCP/IP and the Internet| Names and Addresses| Name Resolution| Routing| Network Services| Some Useful Commands| Conclusions| Review Questions Objectives The aim of this section is to introduce you to the basic concepts of networking provide an explanation of what TCP/IP is and how it works define the terms hostname, network addresses, DNS, routers, gateways, port numbers, domain name resolution introduce various TCP/IP protocols including SMTP, FTP, telnet introduce you to some of the network daemons explain commands like ping netstat introduce you to various network configuration files including /etc/hosts /etc/services /etc/inetd.conf Introduction In this day and age it is rare for a UNIX machine to be totally unconnected to other machines.

What is a Network? A network is simply a collection of machines connected in some way that allows them to communicate with each other and share information. Diagram 12.1.LANs and WANs. RFCs. Client Server : Object Request Brokers The Importance of Middleware Middleware is the connective layer in client-server models.

The multi-vendor software is compiled by designers to enable services that allow multiple machines to process multiple requests and interact across a network. It also allows communication across platforms. It is like a translation layer that liberates the client-server model by allowing it to communicate more freely across platforms and networks in standardized languages comprehensible across software or hardware differences.

Middleware provides a more effective API (Application Programming Interface) than operating systems (OS) or network services. For the purpose of this article, the type of middleware we will be investigating is ORB (Object Request Broker). This article will discuss ORB functions and major ORB technologies like OMG’s CORBA, Microsoft’s COM/DCOM, and Java’s RMI. OMG’s CORBA CORBA stands for Common Object Request Broker Architecture. Java’s RMI. Cobra middleware - Summon at DCU. Abstract The growing aging population faces a number of challenges, including rising medical cost, inadequate number of medical doctors and healthcare professionals, as well as higher incidence of misdiagnosis.

There is an increasing demand for a better healthcare support for the elderly and one promising solution is the development of a context-aware middleware infrastructure for pervasive health/wellness-care. This allows the accurate and timely delivery of health/medical information among the patients, doctors and healthcare workers through a widespread deployment of wireless sensor networks and mobile devices. In this paper, we present our design and implementation of such a context-aware middleware for pervasive homecare (CAMPH). The middleware offers several key-enabling system services that consist of P2P-based context query processing, context reasoning for activity recognition and context-aware service management.
