An Arab Spring ?

EST et Russie / G8 2011 Deauville. A Defiant 'Spanish Revolution' - Alan Taylor - In Focus. Since May 15, residents of many cities around Spain have been demonstrating against the country's ongoing financial crisis, its politicians, and its bankers. The spontaneous protests are the largest since the country plunged into recession in 2008, and they're made up mainly of young people who have set up camps in main squares across the country. Called "los indignados" (the indignant), the May 15 Movement, or simply 15-M, they are fueled by frustration with austerity measures, apparent indifference from politicians, and serious joblessness.

Spain's unemployment rate for those under 25 stood at 43.5 percent as of February -- the highest youth unemployment rate in the 27-nation European Union. As Spain enters an election weekend, this collection focuses on some recent scenes of dissent from around the country. Fukushima : Tepco découvre des dégâts pires que prévu, Actualités. How anti-Semitism in interwar Germany was influenced by the medieval mass murder of Jews. What causes some people to engage in hate crime, while others remain aloof? Scholars have examined the role of ignorance and political incentives in the formation of groups dominated by hatred (Glaeser 2005). What has remained underexplored is the extent to which cultural transmission predisposes people to act violently, in a fashion similar to that of their ancestors. We explore this question for the case of German anti-Semitism. Since it led to the single most infamous case of industrialised mass-murder in human history, it is of particular interest. Crucially, while violence and examples of extreme hatred towards Jews were frequent on both occasions, they did not occur in all localities. When the Black Death struck in Europe, it caused a demographic catastrophe without precedent.

Table 1. Satellite Images of North Korea Prison Camps Find 200,000 Living as Slaves. No one really knows how bad it is, but it's much worse than I thought possible. Piecing together information from satellite images and eye witness accounts, Amnesty International suspects that the horrific concentration camps in North Korea are growing. Some 200,000 people live as slaves - enduring starvation, torture, and rape while performing hard labor.

Many die every year, only to be replaced by fresh bodies. Of those that survive, few will ever be released. Deemed 'prisoners', the victims of North Korea's political pogroms are interned for the smallest criticisms of the regime of Kim Jong-Il, and when they are carried away their extended families are rounded up as well. This is not genocide, it's not a war crime, it's an unending consequence of North Korea's authoritarian government. And it's been getting worse for the last decade. We are confronted with so many atrocities in global news that it's hard to pierce our desensitized skin. [sources: Amnesty International] Many Vietnamese Hmong 'in hiding' 12 May 2011Last updated at 17:22 Hundreds of Hmong people are still in hiding in north-west Vietnam a week after an outbreak of unrest, a priest has told the BBC Vietnamese service. Hmong Pastor Thao A Tam said the security forces had arrested more than 100 people over the violence.

Officials said "extremists" had been detained - but gave no exact figures. Thousands of Hmong people clashed with security forces in Dien Bien province last week, in the worst ethnic violence for seven years. Pastor Tam said thousands of Hmong had travelled to a small area in Dien Bien province late last month because they had heard a rumour that the second coming of Jesus Christ was imminent. But the Communist authorities sent in the security forces to break up the gathering, sparking days of violent confrontations. Earlier reports said the protests by the Hmong were politically motivated, and that their demands included more religious freedom, better land rights and more autonomy. Poverty.
