When artist and designer Julio Garcia created his own home and studio in Savannah, Georgia, he connected a fine line between two opposite worlds: organic and industrial.

Working with two 40′ shipping containers, natural materials and the lush foliage of his lot, Julio succeeded in joining disparate elements into a unified whole. The two 40′ shipping containers were placed about 6′ apart on a foundation system of steel I-beams resting on concrete piers. The 6′ gap was filled with a wood-framed floor and shed roof. Natural wood delineates the gap between the containers as well as the new window openings cut into them. An elevated terrace made of local wood invites us to enter through a glass sliding door positioned between two parallel blue steel containers. Contrasting with the exterior, Garcia gave the inside a clean contemporary look. The kitchen is subtly set off from the rest of the open living area by the use of wood flooring instead of what appears to be black-tinted concrete.

Another goal was to construct the pavilion using methods that were as low-tech as possible, so they argued for simple joints of fabric or metal tape.

As the intersection between two paper tubes was pushed up to form the three-dimensional grid, an angle would open and a suitable amount of tension would be applied. Further, since the paper tubes themselves would rotate to draw a gentle S curve, the joint would allow for three-dimensional movement. Tape was an appropriate solution. Bamboo: The new super construction material. Researchers from the University’s BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials, in collaboration with a team from Coventry University and the University of Cambridge, are exploring the use of bamboo for the widespread construction of homes.

Bamboo: The new super construction material

Bamboo holds a number of benefits over other construction materials – it grows extremely quickly, reaching maturity three times faster than hard woods, and is renowned for a strength that is comparable to steel. However, inherent drawbacks currently prevent the widespread use of this material. Bamboo has limited durability when exposed to UV rays and humidity, and its thin walls and empty internal diaphragm imply that it has poor fire-resistance.
