Google seems to have nailed the online search advertising market, finding the magic formula to attract both advertisers and consumers. The Web is still wide open, however, for approaches to advertising that catch users at other points in their online lives, perhaps when they’re not actively searching for something. At TechCrunch Disrupt, a Web technologies conference in New York last week, there was a crowded field of companies hoping to provide new ways for brands to advertise online or to consolidate existing efforts to communicate through social media. WeReward, for example, which made it to the second round in the startup battlefield competition at the event, is an Orlando, FL-based company that attempts to convert social activities that consumers are already enjoying into ways for advertisers to get attention. The company noted that users are already using services such as Foursquare to share their locations, and sharing photos through sites such as Flickr.

Google is phasing out the internal use of Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows operating system because of security concerns, according to several Google employees. The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google, which employs more than 10,000 workers internationally. “We’re not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,” said one Google employee. “Many people have been moved away from [Windows] PCs, mostly towards Mac OS, following the China hacking attacks,” said another. New hires are now given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system.
“Linux is open source and we feel good about it,” said one employee. “Microsoft we don’t feel so good about.” In early January, some new hires were still being allowed to install Windows on their laptops, but it was not an option for their desktop computers. Previously, aspiring authors have been able to work with third-party aggregators with whom Apple has deals, such as Lulu, Smashwords, and Ingram. Those firms take care of a lot of the overhead, such as acquiring an ISBN for your book and making sure the ePub file checks out. However, there’s now nothing to stop you from doing it yourself, if you prefer, now that Apple has added e-books as an option to iTunes Connect.

While editing the piece, I briefly toyed with the idea of narrating it, either via spoken voice-over or onscreen text. While we were thrilled with Google's many announcements at Google I/O, particularly the announcements that went against the grain of Apple's one-man-one-device ethos, we have to take the company's claims to openness, choice and freedom with a grain of salt.
This is America, Google is a major and successful corporation, and as such, it will be "open" usually when such behavior is profitable. The company's not going to open-source its search algorithm any time soon, for example, or make its advertising software free for modification and redistribution. Relative to other corporations, such as Apple, Google does a commendable job of not "being evil," but it still controls a ton of user data and infringes on user freedoms in specific ways. We choose to relinquish these freedoms in exchange for conveniences such as Google search, Gmail, Blogger, Buzz, Maps, Reader and a score of other applications. The Forum, which will remain open at least until June 20, 2010, is designed to stimulate debate, enhance understanding, and broaden awareness of the question. While sighted individuals enjoy unprecedented access to copyright-protected content, in some contexts, social, economic, technological and legal factors, including the operation of copyright protection systems, can combine to seriously impede access to such works by the blind or other reading impaired persons. More than 314 million blind or visually impaired people around the world stand to benefit from a more flexible copyright regime adapted to current technological realities.
