"The philosophy behind much advertising is based on the old observation that every man is really two men -- the man he is and the man he wants to be. " -- William Feather Alex Bogusky, advertising Dadaist, postmodern media manipulator, pop-culture Houdini, daddy of 21st-century advertising, and now a seeker of meaning on the dirt path of life, invites me and his monk into the FearLess Cottage. Inside the quaint cherry-brick-and-wood house, so placidly typical of Bogusky's adopted hometown of Boulder, Colorado, are the props of an adman attempting rehab. There are the wrinkled tubes of acrylic paint lying like fallen soldiers next to a canvas and easel, an acoustic guitar alongside a cowhide chair, and a wood-framed mirror from Bogusky's former Crispin Porter + Bogusky client Russ Klein, Burger King's ex-president of global marketing.

Inscribed on the mirror is a quote from Mother Teresa. If only it were that simple. Maybe. . (2) Alex at 12 "I was done developing then. We're done. Today at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, CA, CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo sat down with a panel including Bill Joy, Kevin Kelly, Nicholas Negroponte, and Willie Smits. The topic was basically the future of technology. And Negroponte had the most interesting (or at least the most controversial) thing to say. The physical book is dead, according to Negroponte. He said he realizes that’s going to be hard for a lot of people to accept.

By “dead,” he of course doesn’t mean completely dead. “People will say ‘no, no, no’ — of course you like your libraries,” Negroponte said. “It’s happening. Naturally, I love these type of predictions. Hypertext history. I’m not a big fan of acronyms in general but I like the word WWILF: What Was I Looking For. It’s such a webby word. You know the drill: you start looking at a Wikipedia page about zeppelin crashes and before you know it, you’re reading about ekranoplans and Dyson spheres. That’s wwilfing. Interestingly, there’s no Wikipedia entry for wwilfing. I’ve found the wwilfing motherlode for markup nerds like me: The Early History of HTML. Thrill to the original code by Tim Berners-Lee for parsing hypertext! Interestingly, that first ever web page almost validates as HTML5. As an aside, the world’s first ever web site went live exactly nineteen years ago on August 6th, 1991.

Back to that document about the early history of HTML… it’s a fascinating look at the origins of many of the elements that we use to build web pages today. That’s a textbook example of the design principles that are now codified for HTML5: The proposed solution—what would become the World Wide Web—is ingenious: New York Times on how they design their graphics. Leading up to their book, Turning Pages: Editorial Design for Print Media, publisher Gestalten has a chat with Steve Duenes and Archie Tse — of famed New York Times graphics department — about what goes on behind the scenes. They've won countless awards for their graphic work, but now it's time to dive behind what makes America's most venerated general interest newspaper stand a world apart. Graphics director Steve Duenes and his team of 30-some journalists at The New York Times turn around images at a breakneck daily, if not an hourly, pace, sorting and sifting through reportage to provide the clearest visualization of data possible.

What most people don't know is that there's a lot of work, fact-checking, and reporting that goes into each graphic, and the fine NYT group does it all. It's this attention to detail that sets them apart from the rest. Well, that and people who are extremely good at what they do and have fun doing it. Anyways, I digress. Book Review: The Man Who Sold America. Why Design Contests Are Bad. Posted by Don Norman | 28 Jul 2010 | Comments (20) Every year the world holds many contests for industrial designers. Lots of submissions, lots of time spent by jurors reviewing them, lots of pretty pictures afterwards. Fun to read, wonderful for the winners. What's the problem?

I have been a juror for a number of contests, including the major American yearly contest sponsored by the Industrial Design Society of America, IDSA , and BusinessWeek . Although I always enjoyed the experience and the interaction with talented, hard-working fellow jurors, I have become increasingly dissatisfied with the results. Why are shows bad? Jurors in design contests can only judge the material submitted to them. I recently spoke with a founder of one of the largest and most successful design firms in the world who confessed that although his firm consistently wins multiple awards year after year, he is frequently puzzled by the choices. Well-meaning, well-qualified judges are thwarted by the system. Smart Design: The Breakup Letter. Katherine Schwarzenegger: Defining Beauty. According to the dictionary, the word beauty is defined as a "quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or pattern, or something else.

" If this is the definition of beauty, why is it that we all categorize beauty as only being based on the outer appearance rather than the inner or overall picture of an individual? It is no wonder that only 2% of women describe themselves as beautiful when we live in a society where the outer and physical appearance of an individual can make or break them. My name is Katherine Schwarzenegger, and I'm the author of the soon to be released book Rock What You've Got: Secrets to Loving Your Inner and Outer Beauty, From Someone Who's Been There and Back. I've always had an interest in the concept of beauty and how it can mean so many different things to different people.

Experts: Ansel Adams photos found at garage sale worth $200 million.

Ansel Adams photos bought at garage sale NEW: Negatives were stored under a pool table for yearsMan paid $45 at a California garage sale for 65 glass platesExperts concluded negatives were lost Ansel Adams photosPhotos are a "missing link" in Adam's career Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Rick Norsigian kept two boxes he bought at a garage sale under his pool table for four years before realizing they may be too valuable to store at home. The Fresno, California, commercial painter learned this week that what was in those boxes he paid $45 dollars for a decade ago could be worth more than $200 million.

"When I heard that $200 million, I got a little weak," Norsigian said at a Beverly Hills art gallery Tuesday. Art, forensic, handwriting and weather experts teamed up to conclude the 65 glass plates in the boxes were photographic negatives created more than 80 years ago by Ansel Adams, the iconic American photographer whose images of the West inspired the country. Neurons to inspire future computers. 23 July 2010Last updated at 10:46 The way nerve cells communicate is being studied by the research teams. The way neurons communicate could inspire the next generation of computers. Researchers are developing novel computers by mimicking the way that neurons are built and how they talk to each other.

Basing computers around neurons could lead to improvements in visual and audio processing on computers. It might mean that computers learn to see or to hear in the future rather than just rely on sensors. As well as building computers, the researchers are also helping to improve understanding of nerve cells and how they operate. Smarter seeing While artificial neural networks have been around for more than 50 years they typically do not copy real neurons very closely. The researchers are unpicking the subtleties of nerve-to-nerve communication "We want to learn from biology to build future computers," said Dr Wennekers. "It might lead to smart components that are intelligent," he said. Big brain. Can the UK be the next hub for the digital production industry? Although the last eighteen months have been a really challenging time for most people in the advertising industry, there is one sector that has positively blossomed as a result of the turmoil caused by the recession.

As advertisers consolidated their spend into single agencies, many found that they just did not have the capability to deliver on the digital side and therefore relied heavily on the digital production companies. Piero Frescobaldi said, “We have been in production for 10 years now, but the last 2 have been the most exciting, as we have seen the best creative teams of ATL agencies world wide actively reaching out to production shops and enjoying it.“ Historically Sweden has been the hub of digital production for quite some time with such great agencies as B-Reel and North Kingdom (although B-reel also now has capabilities in London). So what is exciting those in the digital production world? So what developments can we expect over the next 12 months. Hey, like this post? 10 Great Behind-the-Scenes Glimpses of Google [VIDEOS] Early Experiments Online. In 1995, along with many people all around the globe, I was making my first Web page, for an experimental film club in Moscow.

I still remember confusion about the new medium. Was it here to replace everything that was before, or was it just a temporary phenomenon to give way to something else next Christmas? Whatever the future would hold, one thing was absolutely clear: in a couple of more weeks, maximum a month, when the next browser version was released and the connection got a bit faster, with some more memory in the computer, it would be possible to watch films online. I even made a “cinema” button for the menu, ready to activate it as soon as the technology was ready. Fortunately, it took a while. The work of early Web artists was closer to the ideals of experimental film or theater performance than those of video. Mouchette.org was started in 1996.

Image Credit: Business Pundit For a long time advertising has operated on a conceit that brands and consumers were in dialogue when, in truth, brands were dictating consumer behavior, pushing messaging on the public and often exploiting their trust or gullibility.

Phrases such as “We’re here to help you”, “We put you first” and notions like customer-centric companies sounded good, but as brands discovered more profit could be eked out of customers by manipulating their messaging, such language lost much of its meaning. Thanks to information on the web and social media connectivity, consumers are now better informed and media savvy. By organizing themselves within social networks they have found their voice. The phrase “be careful what you wish for” comes to mind.

Brands finally got the two-way dialogue they’d been talking about. Yet brands shouldn’t fear angry customers. A great example of this is the t-shirt company, Threadless.
