Why your brand needs to consider the question of colour - Emirates Business 24|7. The post-recession world is moving away from the blacks and gray's of 2009 and embracing blues, whites and warm golden yellows, said branding analysts. Discussing the importance of colours for brands, Shaun Loftman, Creative Director, Landor Associates, Middle East and North Africa and South Asia, told Emirates Business: "In just the same way as a person's entire physical appearance and demeanor contributes to the way we perceive and react to them, it is the same with brands and businesses.

"Colour just so happens to be one of the most prominent and possibly the most visible codes that a company, business or brand has at its disposal. " Colour is one of the very important factors in brand building as it helps to communicate the brand's attributes. This is because colour is the strongest visual signal. It not only helps define categories of businesses and products, it can be the most exclusive and differentiating asset owned by a brand.

So what are the colours that will dominate 2010? CS5: An evolution of the designer’s toolbox. After months of hinting and speculation, Adobe has unveiled the latest version of its popular design toolbox, Creative Suite 5. Beneath a mountain of new features, the suite also received a comprehensive brand refresh. We talked with Adobe’s brand design team to find out more. Since its humble, grayscale beginnings on the Macintosh Plus, Adobe Photoshop—and more recently, the Adobe Creative Suite—has become a vital component in nearly every designer’s toolbox, forever changing the way we work. This year, Photoshop is celebrating its landmark 20th anniversary. As a longtime user, since at least version 4.0 (CS5 marks the release of version 12.0), I’m always curious to see what the next generation will bring. Typically, it comes as a mixed blessing—new features to improve speed and workflow are always welcome, as long as you take the time to learn them and (of course) fork over the upgrade fee.

As I was watching Jeff Deutchman's documentary "11/4/08" a few weeks back at SXSW, it occurred to me that his "consensual piece of cinema" -- shot by professionals and amateurs on Obama's inauguration day and ending with a title card asking for more footage to be collected online via the film's website and eventually added onto the existing product -- wasn't a film; it was some new hybrid of the medium in which the movie was only one piece of the puzzle. With that in mind, "11/4/08" should most certainly be the one of the selections of the inaugural DOC NYC Festival, "New York's first and only festival celebrating documentary storytelling across the fields of film, photography, prose, radio and other innovative forms" curated by Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen, the minds behind the IFC Center's ongoing Stranger Than Fiction documentary series.

Adobe man to Apple: 'Go screw yourself' High performance access to file storage Adobe platform evangelist Lee Brimelow has told Apple to "go screw yourself," upbraiding the Cupertino cult for banning iPhone and iPad applications translated from code Steve Jobs doesn't like. Such code includes - most famously - Adobe Flash. Yesterday, Apple released an updated SDK for the upcoming iPhone 4.0 OS, and unlike previous incarnations of the kit, it forbids developers from accessing Apple's APIs through any sort of intermediary layer that translates code not officially supported by the platform. "Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited)," reads the new iPhone 4.0 SDK.

But Brimelow sees the move as mere Apple pettiness. Germany-knows-a-thing-or-two-about-saving-shrinking-cities from good.is. Redirect. News April 8, 2010 02:41 PM ET Computerworld - A technology guru at Intel Corp. predict that the internet will look significantly different in five to 10 years, when much of it will be three dimensional, or 3D. Sean Koehl, a technology evangelist with Intel Labs, said technology is emerging that will one day change the way we interact with electronic devices and with each other. That could come as soon as five years from now when, he predicted, there will be realistic-looking three-dimensional applications. "I think our lives will be a lot different," said Koehl.

"Look at the trends of the last decade or two. Think about computers becoming widespread, and the Internet and these mobile devices. "When we get to the point where suddenly it becomes easy to do something that seemed hard before, then it will be a dramatic change," he added. He said an initial push to develop three-dimensional online applications was slowed to do more work on 3-D quality and application functionality. iAd: Apple's Mobile Advertising Platform For iPhone OS 4 UNVEILED. Apple unveiled iAd, a new mobile advertising platform that will be built in to the new iPhone operating system, iPhone OS 4.0. Steve Jobs highlighted five key features of iAd: there will be an emphasis on 'emotion and interactivity;' ads will allow users to stay in the app they're using; iAd will be built into the iPhone OS; and Apple will sell and host the advertisements that appear on iAd, sharing 60% of the ad revenue with the developer.

Jobs explained, "We have a lot of free or reasonably priced apps... we like that, but our devs have to find ways to make money. So our devs are putting ads into apps, and for lack of a better way to say it, we think most of this kind of advertising sucks. " He added: (via Engadget) When you look at ads on a phone, it's not like a desktop. Jobs noted that users are discouraged from clicking on app ads because doing so takes them out of the application they're using. 7 Social Media Marketing Videos From America's Best Universities. 30 Inspirational TED Talks on Design and Creativity. 30 Inspirational TED Talks on Design and Creativity Posted by Richie on Thursday, April 1, 2010 · 27 Comments I think the best part about TED, apart from the quality of their speakers & ideas shared, is the fact that it is all about sharing among the creative commons.

This means, their website has a huge plethora of inspirational videos with great production value that are free for people like you and me to watch. There are talks based around advertising, marketing, industrial design, graphic design, and the list goes on and on. The scope of subjects covered is almost overwhelming, but the common thing that bridges them is the creativity of each idea shared. In this article, I have shared some of the best TED videos related to Design, Inspiration and Creativity. Each of them is more inspirational than the previous. 1) David Carson on design + discovery Great design is a never-ending journey of discovery — for which it helps to pack a healthy sense of humor. Technology Review: Blogs: TR Editors' blog: The iPad Has Not Changed My Life.

We were unable to get our hands on a pre-release iPad so I bravely volunteered to snag one for the office on Saturday morning. Most people in the line outside the Apple Store were giddy with the thought of getting their hands on Apple’s “magical and revolutionary” device. Oddly though, no one quite knew what they’d use it for. “I think I’m going to put books on it,” said the girl behind me. “I’ve heard it’ll replace the television,” said the guy in front. After using an iPad for a day, I’m sad to say it hasn’t revolutionized my life with its magicalness. It’s lightning fast, intuitive to operate, and very good for certain tasks: reading, watching videos and playing games. If you’re into e-books I think it’s an excellent platform for that.

The whole multi-touch, motion-sensing interface is very nice. A few of the apps I downloaded were buggy, which is hardly surprising since most developers have been using emulators rather than the real thing. Jesse Schell: When games invade real life. Image via FlickR courtesy of LucyFrench123 “The problem with brands in social media is that they act like 19 year old dudes”. Yelled Gary Veynerchuck at SXSW, excited as ever. His point was that there is a tendency to approach every interaction with a single goal – sex for the dudes, sales for companies. And to rush towards that goal without pausing for breath. I have been reminded of Gary’s comment a few times this week. John has a new book out: Obliquity – why our goals are best pursued indirectly. The premise of his book is that the greatest, most profitable companies achieve success as a result of focussing on higher ideals than cash generation.

Obliquity – why social media goals are best pursued indirectly Success in social media rarely comes from being the 19yr old dude. However, obliquity is a tough message when you’re a nervous marketing manger who only likes to spend money on safe bets where ROI has been proven upfront or in advance. Please don’t act like the 19yr old dude.

IDEO's Tim Brown on Using Design to Change Behavior - The Conversation. By Reena Jana | 1:44 PM March 29, 2010 Many large-scale phenomena are the sum of individual actions — sometimes millions or even billions of them. Apple’s recent celebration of 10 billion songs downloaded represents 10 billion choices made by consumers to download a song rather than buy it in other formats. In the healthcare space, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported a 50 percent drop in respiratory infections in children, a drop attributable (in part) to the group’s campaign to educate millions of children to change their behavior: To wash their hands. But what does it take to bring about such mass behavior shifts?

Tim Brown, CEO of design firm IDEO, tells me there are. Part of the challenge of designing for behavior change is the age-old question of incentives. But the story doesn’t end there.
