The tiny home movement: a creative response to the US homelessness crisis

Since 2010, the Oakland, Californian artist, whose “dumpster house” was featured on the Rachel Ray show in 2012, has been photographing and studying all different kinds of homes. Kloehn is particularly fascinated by structures made out of simple tarps and cardboard boxes. So, a few years ago, he decided to try his hand at building a home out of other people’s trash. “I wanted to go shopping on the street, pick up illegally dumped items that I see every day and see what I could build with them,” Kloehn says.

“I really wanted to make a home for one day for no money.” The first home Kloehn built was more of an experiment. While it might seem radical to build houses out of bed frames and windows out of washing machine doors, Kloehn isn’t the only visionary working on turning trash into homes. Nationwide, the number of homeless people in the US decreased by 11% between 2010 and 2015.

Cyrille Hanappe. 'Lagos shows how a city can recover from a deep, deep pit': Rem Koolhaas. Guardian Cities: In the late 1990s, you worked in Lagos on a project that was never published.

Why not, and what was the city like then? Rem Koolhaas: When we went in the late 1990s, Nigeria was still in a dictatorship. So we didn’t go with a mission. It started really with a sort of blankness and open-endedness.

Baidu found China’s “ghost cities,” but it is keeping their locations mostly a secret

Ever since the original Apple TV launched in 2007, I had been waiting for this set-top box—a version with all the previous generations’ potential, fully realized—to arrive. So before the UPS man who delivered it got back behind the wheel, I had practically already opened the box, unfurled the power cable, ripped out my previous Apple TV, and plugged in the new one. Apple’s future of television booted up fast, and it quickly prompted me to hold my iPhone close to the unit, so it could magically absorb my home’s Wi-Fi settings from my smartphone.
