Extreme Instability, Scary weather and incredible shots [37 pics. Extreme Instability: Nebraska Sand Hills Monster Supercell Storm Very intense high precipitation supercell storm moves south in the Nebraska Sand Hills south of Valentine, July 13, 2009. Very low, long and fat inflow cloud stretches east of the storm. Winds gusted upwards of 60+ mph into this storm. Tornado warning with the storm mentioned baseball size hail and winds in excess of 100 mph, a rare warning text indeed. As intense of a storm as it was, it only produced one short-lived small tornado. Traffic heading north up highway 83 would be driving right into the storm’s forward flank downdraft, which contained large hail and intense rain. Posted Mar 11, 2011 Share This Gallery inShare15 For more than two terrifying, seemingly endless minutes Friday, the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan shook apart homes and buildings, cracked open highways and unnerved even those who have learned to live with swaying skyscrapers. Then came a devastating tsunami that slammed into northeastern Japan and killed hundreds of people. The violent wall of water swept away houses, cars and ships. Fires burned out of control. Power to a cooling system at a nuclear power plant was knocked out, forcing thousands to flee. The death toll rose steadily throughout the day, but the true extent of the disaster was not known because roads to the worst-hit areas were washed away or blocked by debris and airports were closed.

Feeling chipper, the wood ant caught bringing science to life. By Graham Smith Updated: 07:28 GMT, 11 October 2010 Quite what this industrious little wood ant is planning to do with this microchip is not known, but how appropriate it is that he appears to have a scientific interest.

Because the insect features in a stunning new book featuring the art of the coloured scanning electron micrograph - in the case of this chap magnified 22 times. Microcosmos takes readers into a secret world of extreme close-ups. Some subjects have been magnified by as much as 22million times. Detailed descriptions of the subjets are contained within. The wood ant, for example, is a social creature, and acts as a slave for the blood-red ant Formica sanguinea. Holding steady: The wood or heathland ant holding a microchip in its toothed (serrated) mandibles. Inseminated females of the blood-red ant invade wood ant nests, steal the pupae, and the ants that hatch are made to work for the strange queen.
