To me, the ASUS U33Jc has everything - style, performance, portability, battery life, and value. It’s a sub-$1000 system with a full powered processor, a dedicated graphics card that intelligently switches off to conserve power, and up to 10 hours of battery life if I need it, all in a 3.97lb package that looks like it came from the center console of a Mercedes S-class. Where do I sign up?
Ah yes, but here’s the rub - other than the bamboo trim and the addition of Intel’s WiDi (which is useless without the $99 adapter, sold separately), the U33Jc is fundamentally identical to the slightly thinner and lighter, aluminum-cased U35Jc, which carries a pricetag some $150 lower. Unless you’re absolutely in love with the bamboo aesthetic or with the WiDi concept of a wireless HTPC, you don't have much reason to spring for the U33Jc.
As I said before, I’m personally a fan of ASUS' Bamboo Collection. Tech Report teste l'Asus U33Jc, le PC portable en bambou. Après le test de l'Asus U33Jc chez Anandtech, c'est au tour de nos confrères de Tech Report de se pencher sur le PC portable d'Asus utilisant une plateforme Calpella, composée ici d'un Core i3 370M et d'un chipset HM55. Côté carte graphique nous retrouvons une GeForce 310M fonctionnant avec la technologie Optimus de NVIDIA (voir notre dossier). Mais ce qui fait l'intérêt de cette configuration est, pour rappel, l'utilisation d'un matériau peu commun pour un PC portable : le bambou. Il est présent au niveau du repose poignets ainsi que sur le capot de l'écran. Si les conclusions avaient été plutôt bonnes lors du test chez Anandtech, en sera-t-il de même avec nos confrères de Tech Report ?

The U33Jc's Core i3-370M and Optimus-enabled GeForce 310M are less exotic than what one might find lurking under the hood of high-end notebooks, especially in the thin-and-light category. The wrist-rest's aluminum surface and the plastic base plate fit tight and don't yield anywhere, not even under high pressure. Both hinges, on which the display is mounted, are a bit spongy. The manufacturer has done a good job with the surfaces and material combination. Asus uses the whole available width for connections. The port distribution is unfavorable for the utilization of external monitors: VGA is directly beside HDMI in the front left area. Cardreader and audio ports are found in the front right area. Léger et design, il mise sur sa grande autonomie sans pour autant sacrifier les performances grâce à son processeur double-coeur à basse consommation.
Prise en mains, ergonomie : aluminium brossé = bien, plastique noir brillant partout = pas bien Tout comme pour ses grands frères UL80 et UX50V, Asus a choisi un intérieur entièrement en plastique noir brillant pour le UL30A. Certes c'est plutôt joli, mais c'est aussi une catastrophe au bout de quelques minutes de manipulations (usage normal). Il ne faut pas longtemps pour que la machine se recouvre de traces de doigts (pourtant propres) malgré beaucoup de précautions. C'est donc mission impossible de la garder nette et c'est dommage puisqu'elle ne manque pas de classe. Le capot adopte en revanche un aluminium brossé du plus bel effet, qui tranche étrangement avec le reste de la machine tout en plastique.
La webcam est assez mauvaise. Asus UL30Vt. L'ultra-portable UL30Vt offre des "possibilités illimitées" selon Asus. Avec son processeur double-coeur associé à la technologie "Turbo33" et une carte graphique dédiée désactivable à volonté, c'est un bon compromis entre performances multimédia et autonomie. Prise en mains, ergonomie : un beau mélange entre aluminium brossé et plastique gris Contrairement aux autres modèles de la série UL, cet UL30Vt a la bonne idée d'adopter une couleur grise. Cela diminue considérablement la visibilité des traces de doigts et de la poussière qui viennent vite parsemer le plastique brillant. Cet aspect intérieur se marie d'ailleurs très bien avec le capot en aluminium brossé du plus bel effet. Le clavier est constitué de petites touches (15 x 15 mm) plates et espacées. Le touchpad multi-touch s'intègre parfaitement à la coque et ne se repère que par la présence de petits creux qui permettent aux doigts de ne pas coller sur le plastique brillant.
La webcam est correcte, sans plus.
