Lebanon, a small country with only 10,452 square kilometers, is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, and is highly reputed for its rich history within the Arab region. It’s a “melting pot” of diverse religions and ethnic groups that has given Lebanon a great advantage in understanding the socio-economic situations of the region and adapting to them without defeat towards change. The Fair Trade movement in Lebanon is a result of a desire to make a difference. Home to thousands of small producers, our villages represent the agricultural strength and opportunity that one cannot not dismiss or abandon.
The Fair Trade certification system requires that participating farmer organizations meet demanding, but laudable, criteria: they must work for the good of all in their community; they must seek to minimize their impact upon the environment; they must make information freely available; and most importantly, they must function in a democratic manner, with the leaders elected by, and accountable to, the cooperative's farmer members. At Equal Exchange we believe that we should expect no less from ourselves and each other than we demand of our farmer partners . For that reason we have organized ourselves as a democratic worker cooperative, now one of the largest in the country. Also, in keeping with the Fair Trade ethic we maintain a top-to-bottom pay ratio of 4-to-1. For comparision consider that the ratio of CEO pay to average worker pay was 301-to-1 in 2003 (Source: United for a Fair Economy.)

In good and bad times, The Cooperative Foundation is a steadfast supporter of cooperative development, research, and education. For more than 60 years, vision and generosity has guided the work of the foundation and in turn benefited cooperative members and communities. Formed by cooperative leaders in 1945, The Cooperative Foundation received much of its financial assets through the vision and generosity of St. Paul architect T homas Ellerbe Sr. and his family. The Ellerbe contribution is a striking reminder that individuals can make lasting positive impacts. That endowment and contributions from cooperative benefactors continues to support the work of the foundation.
The United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives is a national grassroots membership organization of and for worker cooperatives, democratic workplaces, and organizations that support the growth and development of worker cooperatives. We were founded in 2004, the result of several years of organizing on the part of worker cooperatives and regional groups from around the country. We provide support to our members and educational outreach to the public through conferences and events, resource referrals, and networking and training opportunities. The municipality of Cajibio, Colombia, was the site of Call of the Mountain 2012. This is a question I am asked often these days (& years…).
