People's Produce Project | Healthy Works

http://www.healthyworks.org/healthy-foods/peoples-produce The People's Produce Project brings healthy foods to residents, businesses, and schools in Southeastern San Diego. Project New Village and Healthy Works teamed with local residents to create the neighborhood's own farmers market and community garden . There is a higher rate of most diseases in Southeastern San Diego than in the rest of San Diego County. Part of the reason is that the area lacks access to healthy foods. Poor nutrition is a key risk factor for developing obesity and other chronic diseases. Residents can attend free healthy cooking classes and receive a locally-based cook book.

Cigars, little cigars, and cigarillos are often among the first tobacco products that teens use. Commonly sold individually or in small packages, these products are often low-priced and flavored like candy, making them especially attractive to young people. Cigarettes are regulated by state and federal law and cannot be flavored or sold individually, but cigar products – which pose similar health risks – are not subject to the same regulations. To reduce youth access to these flavored, inexpensive tobacco products, local governments may want to eliminate the sale of individual cigars or those sold in packages of small quantities. This fact sheet explains how communities can limit the sale of individual cigars.
