Masquesi. Nanotrees harvest the sun's energy to turn water into hydrogen fuel. (PhysOrg.com) -- University of California, San Diego electrical engineers are building a forest of tiny nanowire trees in order to cleanly capture solar energy without using fossil fuels and harvest it for hydrogen fuel generation. Reporting in the journal Nanoscale, the team said nanowires, which are made from abundant natural materials like silicon and zinc oxide, also offer a cheap way to deliver hydrogen fuel on a mass scale. “This is a clean way to generate clean fuel,” said Deli Wang, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.

The trees’ vertical structure and branches are keys to capturing the maximum amount of solar energy, according to Wang. That’s because the vertical structure of trees grabs and adsorbs light while flat surfaces simply reflect it, Wang said, adding that it is also similar to retinal photoreceptor cells in the human eye. If you’re looking to start seeds indoors and realize that you don’t have enough windows space to sprout seeds indoors, or don’t want to raise your electrical bill by installing grow lights, building a greenhouse from recycled and salvaged items might be the solution you need. 1.

I have bad news for you. Many folks have heard of Dark Matter and Dark Energy. They're too important to leave it at that. Let's start with a very important distinction. Astronomers see things moving when they look out at the universe. On astronomical scales, gravity is the main actor. Over the last few decades something remarkable has been observed.

Likewise, based on the motions of the universe as a whole (and its structure), astronomers have been forced to infer the presence of energy that cannot be directly detected. Since I find the process of memorizing by looking at the same material over and over again extremely tedious, I’ve developed my own method, which involves finding a handful of introductory classes online and speeding through them really quickly. When I was in college, I used to download podcasts of the same courses I was taking but at different universities, like Berkeley or Stanford.

Then I’d listen to the podcasts while I was on the subway or walking around. It turned out that my approach eliminated hours of studying I would have had to do otherwise, and teachers love it when you’re able to bring in a unique perspective that wasn’t covered in class. If you were in a room full of smart people, would you ask the same person to explain something to you over and over again, or would you ask a bunch of people? What happens is that sometimes the way a concept is taught really resonates with you, and sometimes it doesn’t. Step 1: Ruby on Rails 3 Essential Training by Kevin Skoglund.

This week Wired wrote about the long-form investigative narrative journalism project MATTER, which will focus on science and technology: "The stories themselves are going to be really good, I think. Matter’s founders, Giles and Bobbie Johnson, are both first-rate journalists, and they’ve quietly amassed a list of really good writers and editors they want to work with. They have a smart model: rather than soliciting detailed pitches, they’re more interested in writers coming to them with vaguer ideas.

The writer then gets matched to an editor very early on — before the piece is even formally commissioned — and the final article comes together as a collaboration between the writer, editor, and publishers. " Grow VC in Los Angeles Capital Creation and Crowdfunding Conference. By: jouko ahvenainen The Soho Loft, TSL, organizes a capital market and crowdfunding conference in Los Angeles on March 13 and 14. In this remarkable moment in history, the U.S. regulatory environment, its capital markets and the innovation that drives those markets are simultaneously on the threshold of dramatic change. We are currently witnessing the embryonic period of a cutting-edge stock market just as we usher in a new era of mass media. At the same time, new legislation aimed at facilitating capital formation is being introduced to support this modern infrastructure.

There has never been a more opportunistic time to capitalize on change. TSL’s Capital Creation and Crowdfunding Conference provides attendees with key insight into the direction of the U.S. capital markets during this period of regulatory transformation and the rapid progression of the developing ecosystem. Grow VC participates in the event panel, and Grow VC’s Co-founder Jouko Ahvenainen speaks in the event. Race to relax crowdfunding rules invites strange bedfellows. U.S. ‘microcap’ charges highlight debate over small-firm capital raising | Financial Regulatory Forum. By Stuart Gittleman NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (Thomson Reuters Accelus) – Federal charges filed last week in a suspected kickback scheme to sell thinly traded stocks highlight concerns over investor safety as Congress making it easier for small business to raise capital.

Boston federal prosecutors filed fraud and conspiracy charges last Thursday against 13 people: corporate officers, a lawyer and stock promoter. They were accused of a kickback scheme in which payments hidden by phony consulting contracts were made to an undercover FBI agent, who posed as a hedge-fund representative, in exchange for having the fund buy stock in certain small companies. The charges were filed as the Senate Banking Committee met to consider changing federal securities laws to permit Internet-based “crowdfunding” and other moves that critics said could weaken longstanding protections for stock investors. There’s no doubt a homemade food renaissance has taken root. All around the country, home picklers, jammers, and bakers have been looking for ways to transform hobby food production into small artisan businesses.

In many states, however, selling food you’ve made in your home is against the law. In California, for instance, it’s currently a misdemeanor for home artisans to sell their goodies in the open marketplace. Case in point: Last June, Department of Public Health officials in San Francisco shut down ForageSF’s popular Underground Market, which featured mostly home producers, because its sellers were not compliant with local and state regulations. But due to a campaign launched by the Sustainable Economies Law Center, the laws might change this year. “There are a lot of hoops to get a food business started. For entrepreneurs who want to open their own kitchen, the investment and risks are greater. A growing movement Healthy competition. Into the woods: Seattle plants a public food forest.
