TV dinner. A 1950s-style TV dinner. This type of meal was common until the mid-1980s A prepackaged meal (also called TV dinner, ready-made meal,[1] ready meal, frozen dinner, frozen meal, microwave meal) is a prepackaged frozen or chilled meal that usually comes as an individual portion. It requires very little preparation and contains all the elements for a single-serving meal. A TV dinner usually consists of a cut of meat, usually beef or chicken; with a vegetable, such as peas, carrots, corn, or potatoes; and sometimes a dessert, such as a brownie or apple cobbler. The term TV dinner is a genericized trademark originally used for a brand of packaged meal developed in 1953 by C.A. The original TV Dinner came in an aluminum tray and was heated in an oven.

History[edit] The name TV dinner came from the shape of the tray it was served on.[3] The main entrée was in a bigger compartment on one side of the tray and the vegetables lined up in smaller compartments on the other side. Corporate History White Castle System, Inc. was formed in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921, by a partnership between Walter Anderson, a professional cook, and Edgar Waldo "Billy" Ingram, a local real estate and insurance agent.

In 1916, Anderson developed a different method of preparing a hamburger sandwich by flattening a ball of ground meat and cooking it with onions on a hot griddle for a short period of time. Prior to Anderson's method of preparation, the hamburger sandwich consisted of a thick ball of ground meat cooked slowly on a griddle for an indefinite period of time. His hamburger sandwich proved popular enough for Anderson to open three hamburger stands in Wichita between 1916 and 1920. In March 1921, Ingram joined Anderson as a partner in the operation of a fourth location under the name White Castle. The company's rapid expansion was due in part to its development of the methods required to operate the first chain restaurant in the country.
