The eighth grade students hope their Invase Erase app will teach area residents about invasive species like Eurasian milfoil and water chestnuts, weeds which form into thick mats that choke out native plants and can get caught up in boat motors. “We want our app to be a springboard for people to take action,” said 13-year-old Daniel Zhao, one of eight students in the gifted and talented program at Jefferson Middle School working on the app. Jefferson Middle School was selected as one of 10 finalists in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, a program administered through the Technology Student Association which challenged students to create a mobile application to address a problem in the community.
