Student groups and Occupy activists have called for a day of action in defense of education and social services on March 1. Events are planned in New York City, Boston, Seattle and several cities throughout California, including Santa Cruz. UCSC officials say they are making plans to handle the protest, including talking with other law enforcement agencies to help handle unruly behavior. "We need to provide our neighbors and people traveling in the vicinity of campus that day with real-time information about the impacts of the protest," campus spokesman Jim Burns said. "We're having discussions about the impact to operations that day - things like dining services, transportation, child care access and access to the campus for residents and students.

The game is about social relationships driven by an artificial intelligence system that enables players to shape the social lives of a group of 18 high school students. "This was AI-based game design, so the challenge was to create a model of social interaction and then turn it into a game that's vibrant and fun to play," said lead developer Josh McCoy, a graduate student in the Baskin School of Engineering who led the development of the artificial intelligence system at the core of the game. At the Independent Games Festival in San Francisco, the game is also in the running for the audience choice award, and a special preview release of the game has been made available on the team's website. The event is a chance for the public to catch a rare glimpse into the world of the hummingbird. Attendees can enjoy hummingbird walks, ecology talks, photography exhibits and children's crafts with a hummingbird theme. Keen-eyed observers might note the unusual presence of a pair of typically Mexico-wintering rufous hummingbirds, which scientists have observed taking up rare winter residency among the flowers this year at the UCSC Arboretum.
