They do all fly, but the best are the Christmas tree and the red box kite. Except for the 'Eddy', they are all made from designs contained in two articles called Small Kites, by Nicolas Wadsworth, in Kite Society magazine The Kiteflier for July and October 1998. Unfortunately, these two articles are not yet online, so if you would like the plans, I suggest you ask KSGB to put them on their website. The 'Eddy' is made from a piece of survival blanket, 35mm span and 35mm long, with the 'spreader' 5mm down from the nose. The tail is a length of sewing thread, and the flying line destranded line: it tended to be a bit fluffy, and has now been replaced with a length of 'invisible' thread from Marilyn's kit, very fine and quite soft. Field of the Invention This invention relates, generally, to a method for making a miniature kite. More particularly, it relates to a method that ensures the kite will fly in an optimal manner. 2. Description of the Prior Art Kites and construction techniques for making them are well known but there are a number of problems with such construction methods when the size of the kite is reduced to approximately the size of an index card. How to Make REALLY Small Kites that REALLY Fly! Small kites, especially ones that both fly well and are attractive to look at, have a special charm.

How to Make REALLY Small Kites that REALLY Fly!

Even though kites of this type are now commercially available, making one yourself is still the best way to get one. As with other special kites, these small kites require unusual materials and construction techniques, but the finished product is well worth the extra effort. How Small is Small? The word small is relative, of course, but for the sake of this article a kite of less than 12 in. (30 cm) is considered small. A kite that is 12 in. to 10 ft. (3 m) is considered medium-size, and a kite over 10 ft. is large. The materials and construction methods that are suitable for one size of kite almost never work if the plans are reduced or enlarged by a significant amount. The kites described in this article are all about three inches in size, but some have been made to fly successfully as small as 1 3/8-in. on a 25-ft. line out of doors (though a five-inch tail was necessary).

Sail Loading. Make a tiny, transparent kite from broom bristles. This kite is a shape known as a false eddy.

Make a tiny, transparent kite from broom bristles.

The Eddy kite was revolutionary in its day, the first diamond-shaped kite to fly without a tail, thanks to a unique bagginess to the sail. This version needs a tail because it has a traditionally-taught sail, and has simpler proportions. The size is not important, but the proportions are. Based on a square, it is trimmed off by one quarter of one diagonal. The shortened diagonal is the centre-line of the kite. The size of this kite is governed by the spars I used. I drew the template out on squared paper (the squares are 5mm across) to save the effort of constructing a proper square on plain paper.
