Making Thinking Visible Using iPad Apps. Visible Thinking. Purpose: What kind of thinking does this routine encourage?

Visible Thinking

The routine helps students develop thoughtful interpretations by encouraging them to reason with evidence. Students learn to identify truth claims and explore strategies for uncovering truth. Application: When and Where can it be used? Use Claim Support Question with topics in the curriculum that invite explanation or are open to interpretation. Launch: What are some tips for starting and using this routine? Following each person's report, take a moment as a group to discuss the topic in relation to the claim before moving on to the next person. After everyone has had a turn, reflect on the activity.

Making thinking visible. Change Ahead. For the last 3 years, educators in my department (IB Language Acquisition / foreign language) have been working hard at enriching and diversifying our appreciation for diverse approaches to teaching; as well as at broadening our explorations of learner-centered practices that benefit inquiry-based teaching and learning.

The goal has always been clear to us: our focus is the process, and the learning experience. Building a community of learning from the moment we plan our curriculum and our classes, to the moment when we experience the creation of new understandings, has just been a very pleasing side effect. Evidently, in this journey, teachers and students are included. Teaching in three IB programs (PYP, MYP and DP) has helped me consolidate the scaffolding strategies and approaches that I implement as my students move form one stage or phase to the other.

Yet, no other ‘transition’ excites me more than the one that occurs from the Primary Years Program to the Middle Years Program.

I believe it is vital that in our crowded curricula, we have a clear framework that encourages deeper thinking and connections between disciplines. Below is my presentation for the Teachmeet at the State Library of Victoria. It is a short overview of how Concept Based learning fits in with other curricula, frameworks and pedagogies (of which there are so many!). We are rewriting our Middle School Curriculum so that it fits with both the MYP and the Australian National Curriculum (ACARA). There are some tensions there: because the content is prescribed, implementing true inquiry based learning can be a challenge.
