Reuters Releases Social Pulse, A Social Media Hub. Reuters on Thursday released Social Pulse, a social media dashboard that shows what’s hot on social networks, with a focus on business news.

The site is divided into multiple sections: A top articles section, a social sentiment section, a section showing the Klout scores of CEOs, a hot tweets section and a section of stories that are popular on Reuters.com. On the right rail is a section called “Live Wire,” a series of hot links curated by Social Media Editor Anthony DeRosa.

The top articles section, called “The Hit List” and powered by Percolate, a social news service, shows the most popular stories that are being shared by people who are followed by Reuters’ official accounts and by their journalists. These stories are not necessarily Reuters stories; in fact, on Thursday afternoon, only one of the six stories in that section was from Reuters (Director of News Product Alex Leo‘s blog post announcing Social Pulse). More shoppers are using mobile devices in stores to do product research, price comparisons and look up reviews, but according to a new report, accessing the Internet wasn't the top way consumers sought purchasing assistance on phones during the 2011 holiday shopping season.

Nearly four in 10 shoppers called a friend for advice from a store about a buying decision. Research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that about half of consumers (52%) used their phones in stores during the holidays. Of this group, about 38% said they called friends for advice and 24% said they looked up product reviews. Meanwhile, about 25% looked up product prices online to see if they could find a cheaper price at other retailers. The study was conducted among 1,000 U.S. adults over the age of 18 who were asked questions about how they shopped 30 days before and after Christmas.
